I tried searching for a thread specifically about universal basic income and didn't find one... Someone feel free to direct me to said thread if it does exist.

I want to know what everyone's thoughts are on UBI. This is one of those things for me, as an American, having grown up poor and Catholic, just sounded absurd to me on my first take

Just give people money? I know and have always known people personally who abuse the welfare we already have.
So I definitely understand anyone who is hesitant or resistant to the idea.

That being said, as I listen to Andrew Yang and a few others lay out the case for UBI, I have to say I am considering it. The most powerful argument for it is the inevitable trend of automation, which is increasingly threatening more and more moderately skilled jobs.

It's estimated that in the next 10/20 years a good portion of truck drivers, one of America's top middle class jobs atm, will be replaced by self driving cars.

Are we going to tell the country's truck drivers what we told West Virginia's coal miners, learn to code? At what point does it seriously hit our economy if of these people suddenly have no or drastically less income?

Technology allows companies to continue to streamline the assembly of their products with the utmost efficiency, but they still need a vast consumer class to consume their products in order to be profitable. So it seems like the model we're currently running is unsustainable long term.

UBI is not supposed to replace income from working... But rather supplement it and allow for more opportunities to create a business, invest, etc. Because most people won't be content with $12,000 a year ( the proposed rate is $1000 per month).

Thoughts?

I'm in favor of at least trying it on a smaller scale - in towns and cities - just to see how it works. If we could figure out a way to do it nationally it would help a lot. Obviously the problem is the potential expense.

DDM knows a lot about it, more so than me, he'll be able to give more concrete info than I can.

Get rid of all welfare and go to UBI?

Here is Andrew Yang's platform (Democratic Primary Candidate)

UBI isn't necessary. Corporations are benevolent enities whose ultimate goal is human prosperity, so worst case scenario if we slash the taxes of billionaires by another few percent theyll create new high paying jobs for all the displaced workers to do, just like during the industrial revolution.

Flyattractor
Don't we have this now? And it is called Welfare?

According to Bash, DDM knows as much about this as a old man knows about a wet fart.

I suppose ubi could be a useful way for our shadow government corporate overlords to stem off an uprising. When national discontent hits a certain level, it becomes time for bread and circuses.

Like I said I've known people who abuse the welfare system too. In a way some of this is due to the ****ed up incentive structure that welfare provides... Because you get more money for having more kids and less money if you get a job.

My friend's mom used to work under the table because if she got a legit job they wouldn't give her as much... And this lady was hard working and barely managing to scrape by. So it's not always just laziness that gets you trapped in the system... A lot of people are permanently struggling financially and don't have enough marketable skills to significantly improve their finances.

But with UBI, if you structure it the right way, it could avoid some of these incentives for abuse. First off, getting a job doesn't detract from your UBI. It's just more money for you to work with. Second, if it's for adults only or even just the head of household, having more kids won't earn you extra money, only add to your expenses.

So under these circumstances, I think most people would find jobs or other ways to supplement their income rather than just falling back on the base line income of $12k a year. I think it would be a minority of people who just lounge around on their UBI checks rather than the other way around.

Well if anybody would be a Expert on Wet Old man farts....it would be Bashy... I mean did you see that pic of him?

eek!

Surtur
Maybe it doesn't need to be something given every week or month. Maybe it could be some sort of safety net for people living paycheck to paycheck. So if their car breaks down and they need money to fix it they have the peace of mind to know it's not gonna f*ck up their life.

Almost like a form of insurance I guess lol. Not life insurance...living insurance.

Just legalize drugs and prostitution. Breakfast of executives and white collar cucks.

Problem solved.

No idea what you mean by that

When people need essy money, they peddle drugs or prostitutes.

And people with cash to spare are often buyers. Coke and high class escorts/prostitutes is practically a status symbol.of.corporate and political power.

mike brown
I just don't understand what that has to do with the thread topic

I believe in UBI/welfare for tax paying citizens, the mentally/physically disabled, and elderly/juvenile citizens. Nobody else besides that needs or deserves government benefits.

What is left to cover? I don't know what is left to cover based on the posts already made.

Start at a medium sized city. Offer a true UBI, not the stupid crap that offers $500 a month to unemployed.

The Fair Tax Plan offers this as part of the tax system. And I think it's great.

I think I agree with this. I cannot find fault with it which is usually a sign of a good point.

Is it actually proven that the abusers are any kind of majority.

Serious question.

The opposite has been proven.

Fraud represents less than 1% of the users. Less than a billion dollars.

Often, "fraud" and "mispayments" are confused. They are not the same figures.

Fraud = bad person abusing the system
Mispayments = stupid shitty government not managing the system properly
