Knowing this, Superman just follows him there, and each time he tries to grab it, Superman beats the shit out of him and steals it.

Superman would absorb the stellar energy from Surfer well before that happens, with his far superior energy absorption capabilities. Not that Surfer is remotely powerful enough to disrupt with his molecular structure in the least, or anything.

They dont have to literally race side by side, they can go in opposite directions. Hasnt Superman scanned entire galaxies and such?
