Today is the Japanese holiday commemorating the Showa Emperor (Hirohito) and the period of Japan between 1926-1989.

Japan saw bright times, then dark times, and then bright times again under his reign.

Today marks the start of golden week in Japan.

Tomorrow the end of an era will occur as Emperor Akihito abdicates. On Wednesday the Naruhito will ascend the throne, marking the start of the Reiwa period.
