Dione is smart enough to realize he cannot take Hal in a straight fight, so he stalls until the ring energy is low enough for him to scrap a victory.

Hal isnt beating Thanos under normal circumstances.

It's been forgotten a bit, but Thanos is still an absolute unit of tankiness. Blasting him is the worst way of going about beating him.

There is no statement of his effectiveness of lack of outside of a vague "you can handle the power you yield" during battle banter. Thus we fall to the default. Jean is most competent and Thane falls among the group of others. He is stated to be a threat to the universe.
