America's largest private coal miner files for bankruptcy

The slow death of the American coal industry has forced Murray Energy, the largest private coal miner in the United States, to file for bankruptcy protection Tuesday. -snip

The bankruptcy underscores the enormous pressure facing coal miners. A string of coal companies have already filed for bankruptcy, but Murray Energy is among the most powerful and well-connected firms in the industry. -snip

President Donald Trump's election in 2016 had raised hopes in the coal industry for a revival. The president moved swiftly to slash environmental regulations and even installed a former coal lobbyist to lead the US Environmental Protection Agency. But the deregulatory push has been overwhelmed by market forces. Coal just can't compete with cheap natural gas and the plunging cost of solar, wind and other forms of renewable energy. -snip

Seems KMC's Trumper squad either have a very poor memory or can't face the facts.

Fact: Trump promised the return of the coal industry and coal jobs in 2016 as a candidate and again in 2017 as POTUS (edit: Seems he was still promising coal jobs in 2018 as well)

https://media1.giphy.com/media/xT4uQrP2P36nXM7tyE/giphy.gif https://media0.giphy.com/media/xUOwGkLPOAyDWIg2pG/giphy.gif

Fact: It was also said in 2016 that the coal industry is dying and those jobs would be replaced by machinery and eventually dying out as the nation moves to other sources of energy. That Trump was making a promise he knew he couldn't keep to the coal miners

Fact: 2019, coal jobs are drying up, the industry is shrinking

I'm curious who isn't facing facts? You're arguing with yourself here. Or at the very least you aren't arguing with me.

There's another darker layer to this story it seems. There are high 10's of thousands retired coal miners getting a monthly stipend (average of $1,000.00 it seems) and medical benefits from the coal miner's pension fun, of which Murray Energy is the largest contributor.

By filing for bankruptcy, Murray Energy can now legally not pay into that pension fund anymore as they technically 'have no money to spare'. Murray Energy is also just one of 14 coal mining companies who have filed this year alone.

Fear not though, Robert E. Murray is still a high-end millionaire at least; Trump's buddy is safe.

Being liberal does not necessarily mean you are for socialism. A moderate Liberal for example would be in favor of impose restrictions on companies with unfunded pension plans that cannot be as easily written off with a Chapter 11. Tbh, anyone in favor of capitalism would be in favor of something closer to those lines. Maximizing the productivity of workers and reducing unemployment, through tighter regulations on corporations, isn't anti-capitalist.

Many republicans have to pander to coal miners because they rule a few right wing states, and if the coal miners were to vote dem in those states the republicans would lose control of the senate. And coal miners don't mind accepting socialism as long as it benefits them and only them, as is the case for most people. Socialism for me, hamstrung capitalism for thee.

Before Trump became president, how many jobs were predicted to be lost vs. how many were actually lost?

If the data is to be represented honestly, the title should really be "Trump saved x coal jobs in waning coal industry."

Or, "Trump fails to deliver on campaign promise: coal jobs keep pace with pre-election losses."

Depending on whether or not he slowed the coal job loss trend. Coal is on the way out. It has been for a many years, now.

You can't save it. Only delay the inevitable.

However, if you take a look at the numbers by year, you can see the details:

Obama's last term:

January 2012: 89,700
Dec 2016: 50,500

Result in 4 years: -39,200 jobs

Trump's first term (so far):

January 2017: 50,900
May 2020: 46,600

Result in 4 years: -4,300 jobs

https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/CES1021210001

However, jobs were quickly growing in May. I expect June to do the same. We'll see what coal jobs look like in 2.5 months. Very bad news for the Democrats, from a voter perspective in the rust belt states, if Trump can come close to Jan 2017 job figures in a waning industry.

When Trump took office in Jan 2017 coal was at 50.9, it's gone up and down a bit since then with a peak of 52.3. He's at best put a bandaid on it as the story noted. It's now a 46.6, even if it keep going upward a little at a time all the way to November, it's probably too little too late.

It's also not what he promised the coal industry. Though it should be noted that he probably still has the majority of coal votes despite his failure to 'fully revive coal'.

"Beautiful clean coal." -Trump
