All too easy.

BrolyBlack
That was still better than Avatar

NemeBro
Nah, Avatar is better than TLJ.

Not even close. Plus TLJ shat all over everything that came before. Despite all of Avatar's problems, at least it didn't retroactively ruin other far superior movies.

BrolyBlack
Where is the mystery in Avatar? Also Avatar makes you feel like shit is going to shit and it’s depressing.

NemeBro
Avatar also had, it must be said, a really fun main antagonist.

BrolyBlack
Who the crazy general?

Darth Thor
Avatar > Force Awakens as well. Which is just an unapologetic clone of ANH.

- Waiting to hear that Avatar copied Dances with Wolves.

Kazenji
^ It's either that or FernGully.

-Pr-
And Pocahontas.

Doesn't matter though, yeah, it was still better than TLJ at least.

Impediment

TLJ, TFA, TPM and AOTC all are not.

NotAllThatEvil
I actually still think the phantom menace is pretty good.

-Pr-
I thnk you can make an argument for TFA being better than Avatar, but yeah, TPM and AOTC are worse.

steverules_2
Mmmmm yeah but TPM had a pod race and really cool lightsaber battle

Lord Lucien
Fury Road is better than all of them.

By a Longshot imo. But if TLJ was a standalone movie and hadn't kinda what on all the star wars before it it wouldn't seem that bad.

But I will agree with Impediment, Avatar was extremely overrated but so was Endgame.

-Pr-
Does anyone overrate Avatar? Really? In terms of technical achievements it is groundbreaking, sure, but it's still a pretty solid movie.

Quincy
Is that a thing that can even be "proven?"

Edit: That was rhetorical. This thread and the question it poses is all based on opinion.

Congrats, whatever you think - you're right.

Terrible dialogues. Plenty of unnecessary scenes. Pathetic attempts at humour.

No, it would suck as a standalone even worse. TLJ being Star Wars is the only reason it still exists in our minds.

Surtur
How far the franchise has fallen where you can legitimately say "a movie where a dude plugs his ponytail into an animal in order to control it" is better than Star Wars.

StiltmanFTW
How far indeed.

ares834
It's pretty sad. Heck, the SW forums here are pretty much dead despite the fact that the final film in the trilogy comes out in a month, a major video game was just released, and a live-action show is currently airing. By contrast, they were buzzing with activity back before the Disney buyout when there were no films. It's crazy how bad Disney has mishandled the franchise.

StiltmanFTW
I blame Rian Johnson for everything, tbh.

Kazenji
Rian Johnson did have potential to be good with his prior work before doing TLJ, Don't know what the **** happened.

ares834
I'm not a big fan of any of his other movies that I've seen (Brick and Looper) but his work on BB was great. Anyway, he's only part of the problem IMO. Kathleen Kennedy and JJ also played a role.

Darth Thor
Yeah it was a magic trio: Kennedy, JJ and Rian.

Silent Master
What went wrong is an easy question to answer, they were more concered with leaving their mark on the franchise than they were with making the movies good.

That sounds about right, on top of pushing Disney's agenda

Ayelewis
'Figures the weirdos here would select an objectively good Star Wars to be the weak candidate that contradicts the OP's claim. Anyway, ignoring the virgins, Avatar is obviously better than The Star Wars prequels films. Avatar is a decent film that actually is competently written and directed.

This, absolutely. Avatar is better than any of the new Star Wars really. Which is sad, quite frankly, that they bungled Star Wars so badly.

Avatar has a lot going for it in the visuals and action department. I've grown more forgiving of it over the years. James Cameron, for all his flaws, is a really great action director and he obviously knows how to use a highly visual medium.

BrolyBlack
There is no way Avatar is better than TFA

Patient_Leech
It is. The last half of TFA is cringeworthy stupid.

Not saying I disagree, but it should be mentioned how people started hating on it hard after Johnson's TLJ.

Darth Thor
Personally I think people were just taken in by the hype of a new Star Wars film for TFA.

But as time went on, they realised, its a kind of dumb film.

StiltmanFTW
You know in your heart JJ wouldn't screw up nearly as bad as Rian with TLJ.

There were things set up in TFA and TLJ phucked it up

Darth Thor
There were bad things set up in TFA, which TLJ just made even worse.

Sure why not

Quincy
Are people really pretending that the prequels were more competent and better films than any of the Disney Star Wars outings?

Robtard
In a rare moment, I agree with TI. I'd rather watch any SW flick over Avatar.

Avatar was neat when it came out, because of the highly advanced 3D, but the the film/story is just meh. Sam Worthington is also a shitshow.

BruceSkywalker
ROTS and AOTC are better than Avatar but that isn't saying much

John Murdoch
TPM < Avatar
AOTC > Avatar
ROTS >>> Avatar
ANH >>> Avatar
ESB >>>> Avatar
ROTJ >> Avatar
TFA > Avatar
Rogue One >>> Avatar
TLJ < Avatar

I wasn't much of an Avatar fan when it came out, but it's technical mastery from Cameron on down is second-to-none. Unfortunately, that's all it did right (well, Stephen Lang's villainous colonel was solid), and each Star Wars film has either great characters, incredible action sequences, dazzling effects, fulfilling plots, and/or music that is some of the best in film history. The only reason I put TPM and TLJ lower is because
1. TPM is an outright bad movie besides the Darth Maul vs Obi-Wan & Qui-Gon handicap match
2. TLJ is a very well-made film on the production values side of things, but the plot threads from TFA that go nowhere, butchering of original trilogy characters, worst-made sequence in SW history on the casino planet, and force-fed agenda drag it down too much for me.
