The alligator situation is worse. Much higher chance of getting bitten and death-rolled by an alligator.
With the black bear, you just need to be imposing, large, and loud, and you will likely scare it away. Unless the bear is rabid.
tru-marvell
Yeah but that bear was pretty persistent...just imagine had one of those guys stumbled and fell...whereas that gator seemed to have given up after the initial attack.
Both are bad...I'm not the greatest swimmer, so yeah falling into that swamp would be almost sure death for me.
samhain
Yeah, I'd prefer my chances (slim though they may be) with the bear, on the other hand, if you can kill an alligator you'll have a nice new belt with matching shoes possibly.

Agree with all of the other posters who replied. Much prefer my chances escaping from a bear rather than from an alligator or crocodile who I am already in the water with.
Shouldn't this thread be in off topic forum though?

I'd fancy my chances more with a black bear than a grizzly. Especially if I was someplace like Kodiak Island.
Now a Kodiak grizzly with paws like this

v a gator like this?

I don't fancy my chances with either.

I always hike very steep trails.
Bears have trouble running down steep inclines.

Just because its a myrh doesn't make it not true.
Just like the fastest a human can run isn't a strict limitation on the maximum speed of all humans, and its possible I can run 50 miles per hour under stress.

Generally, I'd pick the bear because at least I'm still on land, I can see it, throw dirt in its eyes, act loud and threatening, etc. With an alligator attacking me in the water: now I'm totally in the critter's element, harder to keep eyes on it, added danger of drowning, and so on.
But in these particular instances, I'd pick the gator cuz it just knocked the kayak over and left, whereas the bear was persistent (although in this case, the bear seemed young and only curious).

Holy shit! Is that bear paw real?
If the gator or crocodile was on land then yeah, it'd be much easier to outrun it than a bear. But being in the water with a croc or gator close by is almost certain death. Highly unlikely you'll be able to outswim it. If you're in good shape, you can possibly outrun a bear. They're not nearly as fast as say a tiger or lion.

Bears are faster then mounted horses for sure, you can't outrun them, they are extremely strong, ridiculously strong and being a mammal they can maintain themselves for a long time of "excessive" energy output.
eThneoLgrRnae
Bears are faster than mounted horses? That doesn't sound right to me. So you're saying that if a person on horseback was being chased by a bear that the bear would catch him? Even if the horse was running at mounted full speed?
I know they're quite strong but didn't think they were as fast as you're claiming they are.
Also, humans are mammals as well according to the CL classification system which is why I said if the human being chased was in good shape he could possibly outrun it. If what you say is true about them being faster than mounted horses then obviously that wouldn't be true though.

Yeah. Male Kodiak Island grizzlies are enormous. Can weigh 1,800lbs

A bear that is hungry will not only chase you but follow you, making them far mor dangerous.
Keep in mind also that you can't keep a horse at top speed very long even maintaining canter eats them up quickly.

Ok, I did some google searches on bear speeds and fastest human apeeds and it looks like you were right. A human can't outrun a bear, my bad.
Learned something new today lol.
I still don't think a bear is faster than a mounted horse though. It's just hard for me to imagine a bear beating the speeds of , for instance, mounted horses like those at the Kentucky Derby. Can't picture a bear circling the track anywhere near as fast as even a mounted horse.

That dude was on a bike and the bear never gave up....until the end which was weird ( thankfully for him). I don't think anyone is going to outrun a bear on level ground, esp. running through the woods.

Most horses aren't thorough bred race horses tbf
It would also depend on the terrain. If you were on a clear trail on a horse you'd probably be ok. On uneven or foliage dense areas that bear is munching you or your horse.

Agreed. That kind of terrain would hamper the horse much more than it would the bear.

Yeah, it did seem weird.
