Those types of power ups detract from what Superman is. At his core he's as powerful as he needs to be.

Magic shouldn't be an issue as well.

Superman Prime from the 853 century, after having gathered power in the sun for five millennia was revealed to have the last Green Lantern ring.

And he was defeated by the Deadly Sins.

He's not the only Green Lantern, but he's been in the Sun significantly longer than a dip. Superman Prime is below universe level. We know this because the Seven Deadly Sins are universal, and because he was unable to save Atom's universe.

The best feat I can think of that would arguably scale in some fashion or another is Kal-Kent's and Titano were able to decelerate a moving galaxy with their Force Vision.

And while Superman Prime doesn't have Force Vision, and it's applicability in combat is highly questionable to begin with, Superman Prime is supposed to be more powerful than Kal-Kent. So I wouldn't push galaxy level feats beyond him.

So somewhere in-between galaxy to universe level should be fair.

This is a cop-out answer and can be applied to any character. Spider-man is likewise going to be as powerful as he needs to be for the story to be told the way the writer wants to tell it. But that doesn't change the fact that he has well-established limits, just like Superman.

Except even S1M (Golden Supes) didn't have the Ion entity like he has here.....

Ion Kyle from Countdown was nowhere near Superman Prime in terms of power, so the power increase of the Ion Entity should be marginal at best.

If we go by Classic Ion then it's a different story. But then Superman's power (sun dipped or not) wouldn't matter--it's be like a droplet in the ocean or a grain of sand in a desert--and at that point he'd just be equal to Classic Ion.

carver9
How much does an ION amp power a character. We've seen on panel that it does absolutely nothing against an overpowered kryptonian.

DarkSaint85
Classic Ion was pretty universal though right? Was there ever an official explanation for the differing Ion levels?

But the implication, which came from Hal, was that he could do what Parallax did and reset the multiverse.

The problem with giving Superman this power is a bit like handing someone the Infinity Gauntlet, it doesn't matter whether it's Thanos or Black Panther who wields it because their personal powers are fully eclipsed by the power of the Infinity Gems.

Superman would simply become as strong as Classic Ion because his personal powers are insignificant in comparison.

You should probably consult Galan because he probably knows more of this than I. But that's my take.

Good rebuttal and normally I'd veer from my previous statement in discussions if not for the precedent that has been set as Superman as an idea, or concept. Spider-Man or anyone else for that matter don't have that theme tied to their character. So unfortunately I'm right.

carver9
Lol... you're wrong though. That statement applies to anyone, any main hero. There's numerous of characters that steps out if their tier, occasionally. You're just saying anything.

It's a double-edged sword.

He's also as weak as he needs to be.

If writers want him to be brutally sodomized by Grundy and spend the rest of the comic leaking semen and blood from his anus, that's what will happen.

The only one who has pushed this concept of Superman is Morrison, and he hasn't been writing Superman for the last decade. And Bendis' Superman certainly doesn't reflect those qualities.

Not that I think it's relevant because it's not a meaningful attribute in debates. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the manga (or the anime adaption of) One Punch Man, but the premise of the story is that main character, Saitama, is so overpowered that he can defeat anyone with just one punch. He always wins, that's how he's written.

But to push this metafictional conception of the character to argue that he can defeat Superman, Galactus, or the Living Tribunal is questionable to say the least.

You're missing the point. This isn't simply a tier jump. It's an outright power limiter being broken by will alone. Sure other characters rise and fall to build tense moments and push the plot but in DC Superman is the plot as he's the fulcrum by which the multiverse swings. I don't see a Spiderman or to a lesser extent a Hulk being that pivotal. Originally posted by StiltmanFTW

It is..but blame DCs editorial staff for not setting a hard limit. And sure he's been raped by lesser men but at the end of the day he's not just a super man.. he's Superman. hence his one punch-esque ability to beat anyone. Being legendary has it's perks kinda like Wayne * nods to saint*

We go by on panel evidence do we not? I'm not peddling false statements here when it's explicitly shown.

Yeah, I was just wondering if there had been a canon explanation as to why 'classic' Ion was so different in power levels - if not, then sure, this thread is about how Superman with his perceptions and character and wisdom etc would fare.

Just like any bog standard GL ring would elevate a normal human into a god, relatively speaking. But Kyle with a ring is different to Guy, who is different to John, to Hal etc.

Or how Hulk with the Power Gem is different to Thanos using it, or Jane Foster with the power of Thor is different to Thor with the power of Thor etc. Their characters and utilisations all differ.

I also wondering can god of light hal be qualified as a variation of ion? I mean he basically just someone possesses central battery powers plus infinite knowledge thats granted by mother box
Can someone with sufficient knowledge do what god of light hal did?

GoL Hal wielded the Mother Ring, which, as you said, combined the infinite power of the CPB with the infinite knowledge of a Mother Box.

While a GL who wields the cumulative power of the CPB technically has access to the same raw/infinite power, they lack the omniscience that GoL possessed ala the Mother Ring... That's a huge difference.
