Looks surprisingly good but I'm still expecting it to be rather poor.

BruceSkywalker
looks goo. i am so enthusiastic for it

Ew, GOD no. PassPassPass.

samhain
I'll miss this one out until GRRM releases another ASOIAF book. We need to start boycotting major TV shoes anyway, it's the only way these hack writers will learn, or get fired.

jaden_2.0
In all honesty, the screen writer's previous work doesn't exactly inspire confidence what with his only stuff being the shitty Hercules and the even shittier Rampage.

Still...If the writer of The Hangover sequels can turn around and write the Chernobyl series then who knows...

It has some excellent cast members so there's at least some hope. Paddy Considine is a phenomenal actor (check out Dead Man's Shoes if you haven't seen it. One of the best revenge movies ever made) Matt Smith and Rhys Ifans also have some great works behind them.

Certainly looks much more "fantasy" than Game of Thrones did.

It's an odd place in the Targaryen history to do a series about. The so-called "Dance of the Dragons" rather than doing a series about the Doom of Valyria and Aegon's conquest.

Finger's crossed though.

samhain
Paddy Considine being in it gives me some small hope, Dead Man's Shoes and A Room For Romeo Brass are two brilliant movies (Le Donk & Scor-zay-zee is also really good if you haven't seen it before Jaden.) but he does tend to get underused by a lot of directors I think, he's in Hot Fuzz and he barely gets anything to do even though he has one of the funnier non-verbal gags in the film. Hope he gets an opportunity to act everyone else right off the map of Westeros.

He's excellent in Journeyman as well.
The Girl with all the Gifts is also a very underrated movie with him. Let down a bit in the last act though.

He's also in additional content on the This is England 90 blu-ray where there's a short story about Combo's time in prison after killing Lol's dad. Paddy Considine's character tries to persuade Combo to rape and kill Considine's ex after Combo is released from prison. I've never been able to find anything other than a short clip of the scene online. His character is very disturbing in it.

Robtard
I REALLY want this to be in the quality that seasons 1-4 of GoT was, but I'm expecting 5, 7 & 8.

samhain
I fear it'll more likely tread water, giving us the odd moment of slight intrigue that'll go nowhere, or some boobs, or a decent battle.

Honestly, I think it's a garbage movie designed to make you think it's really good because of it's serious subject matter. It also seems like it was written by the kind of idiot who rides around on a quad bike and needs to go on courses to learn how to do job interviews. I know Shane Meadows is a good writer but I think he got a little full of himself on that one. Once Upon A Time In The Midlands is another shit one of his too.

jaden_2.0
The series are far superior to the film though. They ditch the racial stuff and go into far darker, more personal plotlines. 88 is the bleakest of the 3 but doesn't come close to how bleak The Virtues was.

samhain
I caught bits of the series, reminded me of Nil By Mouth for some reason.

Well I'm hoping for s1-4 GoT plot and writing quality with s5-8 quality budgets and visuals. 😄

Patient_Leech
Will probably try to watch with my wife. She loved GoT.

I'm one of the few that didn't hate everything about the ending.

Old Man Whirly!
Watched this afternoon... seems really bad. Game of Thrones with no scope of heart. The CGI for the gragons has dated too. Was shit.

ares834
I thought it was great.

BruceSkywalker
gonna watch around 6 or 7 pm

Patient_Leech
Oh shit.. this started already? 😳

ares834
Yep. Just officially came out like half an hour or so ago (although it leaked several hours back first).

BruceSkywalker
watched series premiere.. I liked it which is very surprising. There was a moment where I KNEW something was gonna happen which I figured out about 30 minutes into. Will interesting how Matt Smith's character development and the actress playing Rhaenyra's character development will be over the course of this.

the cgi was pretty decent as well

Patient_Leech
So they releasing one a week for a while or what? Is it just like GoT?

Robtard
Not too bad for a first ep, overall enjoyed.

Rhaenyra Targaryen annoys me though, her creepy AF uncle Daemon Targaryen is the best character so far.

It's not quite the intro GoTs had (tons of great characters and a pretty wild cliffhanger), but it was good.

all wpisodes were released all at once HAHAHA

Patient_Leech
Hm.. I'm only seeing one episode available so far, though.. are you sure?

jaden_2.0
Mostly enjoyed it.
The violence was pretty spectacular during the gold cloaks and the tourney scenes but that birth scene. That was proper nasty.
The cast so far are all solid with Paddy Considine and Matt Smith in particular being excellent but also props to Rhys Ifans who, despite not having any large amounts of make up, is almost unrecognisable as Otto Hightower.
The only negative so far was the unnecessary eluding to it being part of the GoT universe. That nonsense about Aegon the Conqueror having a vision about a long winter just wasn't necessary. Do they think the audience are that dumb that they need that level of exposition to know that the show is related to GoT?
Aside from that the only other thing that pulls me out of the show is the physical appearance of the Velaryon family. Very strange looking bunch that make me think of Ezekiel from The Walking Dead and how stupid he looked.

I kinda like the Aegon stuff. It makes him out to be something of a mystic which is cool. And nicely ties in with Rhaegar from the books.

But, yes, the Velaryon family being black is silly. The actor seems talented but he looks completely out of place. And it will only get more ridiculous considering Rhaenyra's kids... Ironically, GRRM talked about making the Targs black years ago and saying it's a good thing he didn't because they would look like Drow.

Anyway, my biggest gripe was the knights just murdering one another in the tourney.

It's a 170 odd years before GoT, it's a much more savage time, bro.

But I liked it though, scenes were rather brutal and people getting violent because they can't handle losing fairly, so contemporary.

samhain
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would, I could've quite happily watched another episode or two. Dragon CGI looked kinda cheap in a few shots though.

See the kind of shit he spews out when he doesn't take his time.

Yeah, especially when the way the secret is handed down from ruler to heir wouldn't work with the way succession works, particularly in Westeros with the Targaryens.

Incest was extremely common, borderline enforced, in Old Valyria among its nobility.

You mean the Targaryen girl? I thought that too until I saw an interview with her when she looks normal and she's fairly hot TBH. I think they went out of their way to make her look proto-human or something. She does look like The Golden Child on the show though.

BruceSkywalker
second eppy was just okay, HOWEVER a few things were predictable namely when Vicerys proposed marriage to Lady Alicent and Corlys meeting and joining with Daemon

jaden_2.0
Well I enjoyed it. Loving the originality of the gorey bits. The crab feeder as an example. Or poor Paddy Considine having to film scenes with his hand stuck in a bowl of maggots 😆.

They're also doing a decent job of ratcheting up the tension even when the dialogue can seem a bit derivative and cheesy. "We are the 2nd sons. Our status is not gifted. It is made" or whatever he said.

I like the politicking. The sly glances when seemingly innocuous but highly loaded statements are made. Lots of passive aggression.

It'll be sad to see Considine go out of this but hopefully he's raised his profile enough to get bigger opportunities. Because he's not only a phenomenal actor he's also a tremendous director who can get pure gold from his cast. This scene from Tyrannosaur, even out of the context of the film, is absolutely electric.

It's a brutal, bleak watch. It's an absolute sin that Coleman never even got nominated for the Bafta that year because the only other performance that came close to it was Tilda Swinton in We Need to Talk About Kevin. Back when Ezra Miller was good.

Considine's other directorship he also stars in and is also tremendous

How do your rank it against GoT seasons 1-4 and GoT seasons 5-8?

I broke them apart because there's a clear and accepted difference in writing quality between the first and last four among the majority of viewers, with the former being superior.

Bluntly, there's a clear difference in writing quality between season 1 of GoT and the rest of the. 2-4 are definitely better than what came before but season 1 is easily the best and the cracks were showing as early as season 2.

With that said, I wouldn't compare it to any season of GoT accurately. It is far more enjoyable than most of later stage GoT but it also far schlockier and more poorly-written than seasons 2-4 and especially 1.

Agreed, 1 is the best, but I felt 2-4 were just about as good. While 5 -8 were a varying degrees of shit to okay, with a few good parts sprinkled throughout. eg Like the Hardhome battle and Little Finger's downfall

It was a 'were would you rank HoD in terms of quality in the overall GoT verse'. Which you kinda did thumb up

jaden_2.0
The politicking is far superior to GoT and it's helped immeasurably by the super slow build up to the Dance of Dragons. Oddly the only person I don't like in that regard is Larys Strong because his machinations seems to ridiculously obvious yet nobody picks up on it and there also isn't anyone else for him to test his wits against, unlike the dynamic between say Littlefinger, Varys and Tyrion for example.

The biggest downside so far is the lack of scope. Even just in Westeros a lot of the houses have so far been effectively ignored but that will change once they start to declare for either side in the coming war.

Arachnid1
Team green. Alicent is literally just trying to keep her family intact in the face of what's about to happen. Rhaenyra sucks. She's made nothing but stupid, emotional decisions and then threatened/gas lit everyone into falling in line. Everything that's happening is on her and King Vis. Dude spoiled her too much.

Anyway, agreed with the general ranking above so far. Season 1>>2=3>4>HOTD>>>>>>>>>the rest

Like Tyrion he's consistently underestimated because of his disability. He also largely keeps in the shadows, unlike Tyrion who wanted to be respected for his wit and cunning. Though I suspect that will change now that he's a lord.

I don't know what happens, but I suspect his ego will get ahead of him, he'll overplay himself and he'll end up run through, burned alive on his head on a spike.

Eh, it's more than that, but that was a factor and it was highly stupid. It's the fear for her sons, especially the eldest, knowing he's a threat to Rhaenyra's rule and therefore in constant danger.

Finally got around to watching episode 6. The time jump and different actors didn't bother me in theory, but the episode was kind of boring and it felt like starting all over again when the show should be getting really good.

Alicent has turned into one of the most unlikable characters.

Vaemond Velaryon, the one guy brave enough to stand up for what is right and true, gets part of his head lopped off I did laugh though, very GoT, that.

Season 2 confirmed. Guessing this season will end with the Dance of Dragons (war) starting.

ares834
Vaemond didn't give a shit about what was right or true. His brother's granddaughter was going to marry the heir of the driftwood throne anyway and so his brother's line would continue in both blood and name. He wasn't some honorable hero fighting for righteousness like Ned. No, he just was a power-hungry git who saw his own chance to inherit go up in flames.

Robtard
Nah, he was brave AF. He would not stand for some whoreson sitting at the head of his family's table.

edit: Mind you, he was no Ned Stark. But allowing some brown haired nullius-filius, just would not stand, man.

To be fair, he wasn't there when Rhaenyra gave that option to Rhaenys right?

From his perspective, the Targs were wiping his bloodline from history, completely unseating them. He was right to be angry. He just went about it kind of stupid. Should have lived to fight another day. Especially since his brother isn't even confirmed dead. Small brain move.

Almost everyone in the show is an unlikable cvnt but Alicent is the worst of them all. What a stupid ***** lol. Are you sure that's what caused her change of heart? As far as I could tell, it came from Otto's whispering cluing her in on obvious future events and her developing a paranoia of her children getting fuked over in favor of Rhaenyras wishes (which was kind of confirmed when the king just let their sons eye get cut out without any kind of justice; **** that). Maybe that was the catalyst for some paranoia, but it seems more like one factor than THE factor.

Also, Rhaenyra being a lying whore nearly got House Velaryon wiped this last episode.

I don't dispute that a lot of team green is unlikable (probably moreso than the blacks with the exception of Aemond and Helaena), but I'm still on their side. They've got the Stannis effect going (Mannis was team green too). Rhaenyra (and her retarded dad) has consistently made the most braindead choices so far, and those choices are getting people killed. Dumbest ***** in the show.

NemeBro
Probably the best episode in the show so far and they completely faceplant it in the final scene. facepalm

They never learn though. Personally I think the movie "Network" (1976) was less parody and more window into how dysfunctional the industry really is.

Liked Episode 7.

Hoping the season ends strong with the last few episodes...

it does but im biased

If nothing else this show has turned me into a Paddy Considine fan. His aging/disease makeup and performance has been spectacular.

He's an awesome actor. Perhaps even great enough to join the ranks of Willem Dafoe!!

I'm surprised there's enough violence and nudity in this show for you. There hasn't been much of either, only an occasional splash of the former.

Everyone's performance has been basically good but Paddy's is the only one I'd say has been extraordinary so far. He was a constant highlight whenever he appeared.

Patient_Leech
Yeah, everyone is good, but he really stole the show on Episode 8.

This was easily the worst episode of the season. That final scene was complete nonsense.

BruceSkywalker
pretty good episode

nice ending

can't wait to watch net week

NemeBro
Show is getting more dogshit by the moment.

Robtard
She could have ended it all and saved the kingdom from a civil war with one utterance of "dracarys".

But then we wouldn't have a show.

Wonder if the writers will put in a "you're muh qween" from Daemon as a pisstake of D&D's final season assclownery

Overall I enjoyed it. Takes some of the bad taste out of my mouth from S8 of GoT. Was cool to see Storms End Finally

Excited to see Cregan Stark next season

Be interesting if they do something different because Fire & Blood is written from the POV of Archmaester Gyldayn who's an unreliable narrator basing his writings on other unreliable narrators.

Excited to see Cregan Stark next season Cregan is supposed to be one of the greatest fighters of all time isn't he (top 10 at least)? I'm excited to see a badass Stark.

Last episode was great. Holy fuk @ Vhagar towering over the castle walls like a Kaiju. Luc should have cut out when he had the chance and just came back later.

Patient_Leech
Cool makeup effects...

Aemon the Dragonknight is considered to be possibly the greatest knight in Westeros' history and he praised Cregan as the best swordsman he ever fought so maybe.

Jamie Lannister would have beat them all.

Hopefully they don't gimp him then. I know Cole is supposed to be pretty up there too. Harwin was supposed to be a beast too. So far, 0/2.

He's right though, Jaime Lannister would buttrape any character in House of the Dragon. Probably multiple at the same time.

Robb was described as "shaken" and "terrified" by what Jaime displayed on the battlefield, and was sure Jaime would kill him there if he hadn't gotten lucky.

But yeah, sure. Hold him being a POW against him as if that helps your argument, I guess.
