The Cixin Liu books are fascinating. Quinn's Ideas Youtube channel also does an excellent series of videos on them. Very much worth watching.

I've actually seen a video or two of his. They were pretty good. (I think probably about Dune, I suspect)
But will the videos spoil the show?
jaden_2.0
Don't know until I see the show. It's the guys that did Game of Thrones though so the show probably will deviate considerably from the books. Similar to those "did you know, in the books" videos about ASOIAF.
More likely to ruin than spoil.

Intrigued enough to watch the first two eps

Someone made a good point in the comments of this trailer than the GoT chuckle brothers will have a harder time messing this up because the book series is already finished so they don't have to make their own retarded shit up like they did with A Song of Ice and Fire. Fingers crossed.

From the ritle was worried this would be the Trans version of Broke Back Mountain 😆
Does sound interesting, if a bit nerdy.

I'm 4 episodes in and it is a trip. I'm enjoying it.
cdtm
Poorly acted, hacky writing, nonsensical plot, seen better production values from fan movies, oh yeah this is a 💎.
ares834
I'm three episodes in an enjoying it so far. But Auggie is really hampering that enjoyment. She's been a complete ***** since the start (and not in a fun way like Cersei); it also doesn't help that the actress is by far the worst of the main cast.
NemeBro
I've been planning to check out the book anyway so after doing that I might give this a watch.

Better off watching Delicious in Dungeon instead of the show..

I'm two in and I like it enough to watch another ep, but I don't love it.

Biggest criticism is valid in that the characters are not great. What's funny is they're still an improvement from the books where the characters are only a vehicle for the hard sci-fi plot and are even more 1 dimensional.
cdtm
The biggest criticism is the anti-china opening.
cdtm
And I mean come on! The parallels to contemporary American politics are obvious.
A revolution against academics, violent malcontents causing a revolution ala MAGA, it's too preachy.
cdtm
I can't watch this shit.
Pretty woman at bar humiliates guy with her big science, Chinese people talk about global warming sounding BS, the agenda couldn't be any more obvious if it was a silent movie with big cue cards reading "We believe every cockymanie left wing position from the global warning hoax to DEI.
cdtm
"I can not sign this"
If you father is dead sign it! Testify! What do you care about some dissidents, throw them to the wolves and protect yourself!

Triggered by how good it is!
Sad to see the Game of Thrones guy killed, he was awesome.

So did Dave Chappelle use the books as inspiration for his "Space Jews" joke?
It follows the same beats, just swap the asian girl and the zealots in his narrative contacting aliens and everything going really wrong lol.

Yeah, three in and I don't really care about any of them, especially that Auggie woman.
Wong from the MCU is the most interesting so far.
The virtual worlds are nutty enough to be funny.

So the aliens are lying about not understanding deception right?
Because how is it they understand everything else? Like Retribution for conquest?
You're telling me in all their history no one thought to scheme?

So after having watched the season, did the books have a minor researcher who was ok with the aliens taking over?
Were all the characters there but gender/racial swapped, or did the show actually invent characters just to representing?
jaden_2.0
Yes
No but some were. Almost everyone in the books is Chinese as you would expect from a Chinese author.
To answer one of your other questions. The aliens in the book don't understand lies and deception because their thoughts are all open to one another so they can't lie.

Ah, makes sense.
I accidentally spoiled myself by checking around reddit and discovering the aliens were actually being deceptive about the countdown and some.other things, never got the details but the takeaway was they could technically lie to lessers who lack telepathy, but Red Riding Hood was beyond them because as you say they would never deal with liars, as they read each others mind and would see right through it, and thus they had no concept of deception based cultures
I probably won't read the books and wait on the Netflix seasons, am already knee deep in another series "The Culture" (Would love to see how the Idirons, Shapers, or Culture would deal with the Trisolarans video game.)
cdtm
The loyalty oath was dumb.
How did they expect to enforce such a contract?
ares834
You serious?
Thee didn't. Wade expected he wouldn't sign it. The point was to show the aliens that he wasn't completely loyal to humanity.
Patient_Leech
As someone who doesn't have much time to invest in TV shows, is this worth the investment?
I do love sci-fi..

Ah.
I mean yeah makes sense, I guess. I just figured he made lemonade out of lemons with that.

It's only ok tbh, the story is great, acting is fantastic, and...
That's all I can say without risking a ban.
You know what you'd like it and wouldn't see the flaws I do because we are very different people. 😀

I do love sci-fi..
It's a slow start 1st season but it will eventually be very hard sci-fi like Foundation.
It's flawed. As I said earlier the characters are not great because they were poor in the books as they are really just to give context to the story.
Definitely has some extremely unique moments.
cdtm
I don't know, I thought the chinese woman was great, the left wing nutjob was interesting, the Game of Thrones guy was likeable, most of the characters weren't deep but still interesting.. maybe that's because I was binging on Ben 10, characters are not that shows strong point.
Haven't seen foundations but have read the books, and heard they seriously ruined Salvor Hardin.
Patient_Leech
A fellow sci-fi fan friend from work recommended this, so that helps me make my decision. I'll probably try to get around to it at some point.
BruceSkywalker
is there any nudity in this ? otherwise i prolly won't watch

Gay asian!
As if, everyone knows all asians are into cartoon furries.
Patient_Leech
Watched the first 3 episodes of this today.
Ugh, so woke... Asian people, Indian people, white people, a token black guy...
Only people who should be scientists are red-blooded Americans.
But in all seriousness, Jack Rooney, why is he rich and famous?
Patient_Leech
Women scientists, now a gay character... TOO FUCXING WOKE!!
Finished episode 4 and it's getting a bit more intriguing. I'm curious about this alien-worshipping cult...
Patient_Leech
Enjoying this so far (with some significant suspension of disbelief, of course).
But that CG monkey looked atrocious. Why not use a real monkey at least for a few shots?
One more episode left...

One more episode left... I stopped after a few, just lost interest. Might try again later, but more likely not.
Patient_Leech
I finished it with my wife.
It's okay. It's intriguing enough. It just feels like it's going to be a very slow burn like GoT. That is assuming it gets more seasons.
