How many of you guys are intrested in the Mel Gibson movie the passion?? I have heard some about the movie causing some ripples within the catholic church

Omegaman
I am very interested. The only thing I do not like is that it will only be in latin and aramiac with NO sub titles!!

skule
Hey man,
i understand from articles Mel used the bible as the actual script for the movie etc because he wanted the movie to closely follow the bible and the time period, i think having it in latin and aramiac was a brilliant idea but, WHY NOT SUBTITLES????? i mean dude...seriously who speaks aramiac ???? latin perhaps there are some proffesors out there that can infact understand the dialogue but commeeeeonnnn, i think thats ridiculos hopefully mel realises and has subtitles put in, however when is the release date for this movie??? is it this year?

Omegaman
Yes the movie will be very factual in the story of the last 12 hrs in the life of Jesus Christ. Yes , I hope he at least puts sub titles in too! Yes both latin and aramiac are both dead languages!

chico23
I really want to see this movie. As for the controversy it may cause thats really to be expected, but I heard that the loudest voice is coming from the Jewish community. They are afraid they will be portrayed as the bad guys.

skule
yeah i read that about the jewish community as well. How ever i dont understand why they are putting subtitles i mean, dont they realise people all over the world would like to know what the actors are saying!!? hope mel realises that eventually.
Anyone know when its being released?? this year? next??

jesusfreak
Yes, the film has no subtitles at this point; Mel said that he's relying on the intensity of the visuals that no subtitles will be needed...

Last I have heard, they are slating the film to be released next April 2004, around Easter, if his company (Icon Productions...he's footing the $25 million bill himself) finds a distributor.

There has been a lot of controversy from both the Catholic and Jewish communities, based on an old draft of the script, as well as speculation, since Mel is a Traditionalist Catholic...However, he maintains the Scriptural accuracy of the film. I'm looking forward to it!

I've been following this enthusiastically since I found out about it, although there isn't much information since Mel is keeping it relatively mum. If you have any more questions, please feel free to post, or email me. I'll let you know if I have any answers.

God bless!

[email protected] angel

chico23
O.K. so what your saying is ALL the dialouge will be in either latin or aramiac?

jesusfreak
The film will be in both Latin and Aramaic--the former for the Romans, and the latter for the Jews--which were the languages spoken at the time.

Chico23....

Glad to be of service. happy There are several other articles around, but I found these sites to be the most comprehensive; the others are mainly shortened, redundant versions of these. Hope they shed some light for you and other forum members interested in the movie.

Thanks for the recent update! Things should stay interesting...

Take care. smile jesusfreak

skule
I still dont understand the reluctance of not adding subtitles, Mel says the message of the movie will translate through the acting, i am sure it will but it would be good to have subtitles thus having an acurate translation!!! Anyways didnt know Mel is footing the 25mil, must be nice to have pocket change lying around heheh. I dont know which distributor is gonna touch this film as there is already so much attention surrounding this movie.

jesusfreak
I understand your frustration...it would be nice to know what they're saying, even if we already know the story, since the majority of the audience won't know if the movie is verbally accurate. (We can glean some amount of accuracy from the visuals, and an ancient language scholar translated the script, so I trust the content.) Sometimes subtitles can detract, but it's still nice to know what people are saying. In addition, I believe Greek probably should have been used as well (or instead of Latin), because that was the "universal" language of the Roman Empire in the first century (the New Testament was all written in Greek, so that anyone throughout the Mediterranean would be able to understand it). At least Greek is still in use. wink Picky, picky...

LOL... laughing out loud about Mel's "pocket change." Sure would be nice... He just built his own church near his property on his bill as well. However, this "benefit" allowed him to produce this project, since it wouldn't likely be tackled by most (or any) film companies. I agree that finding a distributor for the film will be difficult. All he needs is one to step forward. Let's hope and pray someone will.

And the saga continues...

The trailer for The Passion is out! big grin

w w w. aintitcool .com/ThePassion.mov

(you need Quicktime to run it, and it takes about 2 1/2 hours to download --I downloaded it overnight and watched it the next morning.)

Omegaman
Sounds great doesnt it!!

Sacrifice
Wow, the trailer is stunning.

I would prefer the film without subtitles. Let the art and imagery depict the story. Most people who watch the film will be familiar with the story anyway.

jesusfreak
Sacrifice...I think I agree with you. I would like to see it without being distracted by trying to read as well, especially not the first time viewing it. I would like to know at some point what they were saying exactly, but only after I had taken in the movie as a whole first. I wouldn't mind if they had subtitles as an option for DVD, where you could turn them on or off as you wish, but I think I'd like it without in the theater. I think the images will speak for themselves.

Thomas H
The trailer to this movie gave me chills..cant wait...!

Kes
Distracted by subtitles? Ah americans! lol jk
I want subtitles I won't see a movie I don't know what they're saying.

Sacrifice
There are no long discussions or sermons 12 hours before the crucifixion of Christ. I would think most things would be easily understood by visuals alone.

Kes
Well yeh but...kinda boring. Just watching and hearing something I don't understand messed
But lets not go into that.

I can see I am clearly in the minority here, but I would love to see the film without subtitles. As a Christian I know the story of Jesus (as I'm betting most people do). Seeing it without subtitles would give the feeling that I was actually there, witnessing the event in person.

Just my opinion.

I can't wait to see the movie though, subtitles or not. I haven't cried at a movie since I was very young. This may change that.

Kes
There are tons of movies I know the storie but that doesn't stop me from wating to know what they are saying. It could be just a cover up for bad writing roll eyes (sarcastic)
I don't see how a movie with subtitles would take the feeling of realism. But then again I'm used to them stick out tongue

Like I say...americans!!!

chico23
Bah!!!! Americans want everything to cater to them!!!! Oh, wait I'm american......O.K. subtitles suck yeah....that's the ticket!!

chico23
O Wow I seen the trailer and I'm starting to wonder if they need subtitles after all....that was very powerful. Wow....

jesusfreak
Well, I guess we Americans have eye-to-brain discoordination, but for me, it depends on the movie. I watched subtitles in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and it went relatively fine. However, (especially since I already know the storyline), I feel that this movie is *meant* to be portrayed with imagery rather than dialogue--though that is important--and being in the native languages at the time will make it all the more realistic, as if we were there ourselves. As I said before, I would like subtitles to be an option on the DVD release, but not for the theater. I want to be able to take in the power of the visuals.

I agree with Fish--I rarely cry at movies, but this one may be an exception. I'll have to bring my box of Kleenex (along with a barf bag, according to the reports of the graphic content combined with my weak stomach wink )...

Kes
My americans comment means your just not use to it. You dont have to stare at the subtitles to read them. Oh well I'm so use to them that it's wierd to see a movie without them big grin

jesusfreak
smile I guess that's what happens on opposite ends of the Atlantic. I suppose we are spoiled. (and egocentric, since many movies come from Hollywood) smile However, I think it's safe to say that almost *no one* will be able to understand this movie, regardless of where you live. wink

Kes
lol True that wink

happy kine
i watch movies with subtitles and it never bothers me... as for going to see the passion... it fail correlate anything with any of my passions, so i pry will never see this movie. i'm the opposite of a jesus freak...

can i get the url for the movie trailer again didnt seem to wokr for me. I really wanna see this movie, although no subtitles and just the visual direction may tell the story it would be better to know the actual dialogue to follow the movie but hey i guess mel wants to do his way.

AAStMichael
Sure you can. It is - http(colon)www(dot)aintitcool(dot)com(forward slash)ThePassion(dot)mov

If that does not work, then try going to themoviebox(dot)net and click on the word enter. There should be a new screen with options in the box that says cover story...click on trailers, when that screen comes up, the box for The Passion should be in the 2nd row down, last one on the row....and you should be able to get it from there.....

Let me know what you think....make sure to turn up your volume.....even the music is powerful.....

Fox Set to Distribute Mel Gibson's Film

Despite critics' claims that Mel Gibson has no distributor to put his blockbuster film "The Passion" into theaters around the country, Gibson does have at least one.

According to Fox News' Roger Friedman, Gibson's company, Icon Entertainment, which produced "The Passion," has a distribution deal with 20th Century Fox.

20th Century Fox is owned by News Corporation, which also owns Fox News.

According to Friedman, 20th Century Fox has a first-look option with Icon and right of refusal.

Fox News says it also has the right to outbid another studio. As a result, "The Passion" right now is a 20th Century Fox film.

Executives from that studio and others have now seen "The Passion," and Friedman says 20th is "rumored to be very interested in distributing the film."

AAStMichael
Oops....I guess that was redundant...sorry everyone...esp. JF......I just got a bit over-excited.......

jesusfreak
No problem, St. M...I guess we're both excited. smile I went to the aintitcool trailer site, (www.aintitcool.com/ThePassion.mov) and it no longer works (I don't know why), so I would go to the moviebox option. www.moviebox.net Agreed, the music is powerful, but it's actually from another soundtrack--it's not going to be used in The Passion. James Horner (The Perfect Storm, Titanic, A Beautiful Mind, etc.) wrote the original score for this movie, so it should be great!

jesusfreak
Again, regarding the trailer music, here's some information I found from others who are more familiar with it:

"According to some of the people on here and on other boards, it's from the movie "The Rabbit-proof Fence".

"im sure it is from "rabbit proof fence" by peter gabriel. who also did the fantastic soundtrack for "last temptation of christ" which is called "passion".this must tell us something?????????? "

"Running to the Rain from Rabbit-Proof Fence."

I think the music really fit in with the trailer despite its not being the music for the film. Anyhow, as I said before, if James Horner is composing the music, it should be powerful as well.

jesusfreak
Here's a pretty cool website I came across that keeps track of some Passion news, thought it's not immediately up to date (last posted article is from July 1), nor is it comprehensive. Anyhow, it's fairly informative.

http://www.passion-movie.com/english/news.html

P.S. I've been keeping a running tab of links regarding the Passion since April, even articles going back to September 2002 until present day. If anyone is interested, I can email the links to you... Leave me a private message if interested.

jesusfreak
Here's more from that website:

They included the trailer that can be viewed not only by Quicktime, but also Real Audio/Video and Windows Media Player, at a smaller size than the original 22 MB.

http://www.passion-movie.com/english/trailer.html

Also, this "support" doesn't mean financial, it just asks for information to show how much interest is involved and where it is more prominent. The more, the merrier! It might help bring it to the theaters!

http://www.passion-movie.com/english/support.html

Making a film is one thing. "Distribution", getting it into theaters, is another. There is no doubt that PASSION will be carried in some movie theaters. However, those theaters may be few and far between and it may be a 60+ minute drive just to get to the "art movie theater" to see it. This is where 'distribution' is key. What we need to do now is to show the distribution company that people really will go see the film! The distributor will only push to get the film shown in the theaters it thinks that people will go watch it in. Distributing a film is an expensive and risky business and a company will only try to distribute a film that they think people will go to see!

By signing up on our website, we find out not only how many people want to see this film, but also where. This makes the film more "desirable" to the distributor and therefore the distributor will work harder (and spend more money) in getting the film into lots of theaters, and it also makes the theater chains more willing to carry it because they too think they will make money. When people sign up on our website, it will increase the chances that the film will be in a theater near you! The more people that plan to see it, the more theaters it will be in, the more theaters it will be in, the more people will have a chance to see it.

jesusfreak
Here's a newly released 4 and 1/2 minute trailer that gives us slightly more of a glimpse of the film to come...

http://www.harvest.org/special/index.php/1/2/6.html

tradcatholic
It sounds great!I will be one of the firsts in line to see it.I would prefer it without subtitles. It would be more realistic and just let the pictures tell the story.

skule
hmm came across this article today

NEW YORK (CNN) -- "The Passion," a movie about Jesus conceived and directed by Mel Gibson, could re-ignite violence against Jews, protesters warned Thursday in a rally outside the midtown Manhattan headquarters of News Corporation, owner of film studio 20th Century Fox.

full article here
http://edition.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Movies/08/28/passion.protest/index.html

Amazing eh how a movie can have such an impact.!

jesusfreak
Yeah, I came across it yesterday too. I can't believe they're protesting based on a 2-second scene they only saw from the trailer. They haven't even seen the whole movie!! I think they're basing their protest on what the ADL has been marketing, and I think their ideologies lend themselves to believing them, though they have no proof of their own. However, people will see what they will see. I also think there might be a bit of spiritual warfare going on, don't you think?

skule
yeah , althought i hate discussing religious aspects, i think if the movie is truly based on the fact that mel directed it according to the bible, there is no basis for a protest right? that would mean u would protest written documentation of the bible??? I tend to wonder in this politically correct world these days to many people find excuses to protest anything and everything? like i said i hate talking about religion but i think these protests are unfounded. No one protested the old movies made in the 70's about jesus! or if there was it wasnt reported or it was on a small scale. To much hype on this version.

alive4jesus
Hey, does anyone know if there's a site with a downloadable 4-minute version of the trailer? All I've found is the streaming video for the 4-minute version. I really want to find a downloadable one so I can use it to make a video for my youth group tomorrow. If anyone can help me out I would appreciate it alot.

silver_tears
i really am excited to see this yes
the actor who portrays jesus is excellent and i read articles in time about this movie and i think it will be brilliant and wont make fun of any religion big grin

Also, try

How is it that you think the christians are "ticked" over this movie?I believe its the jewish community that is ticked!

THe movie shows the truth and the truth HURTS!

tyrext
Fascinating stuff I have been reading...
Remember when God created Adam and asked the Angels to show him respect? Only Lucifer who was in charge of the Garden refused claiming to be made of superior material.
Inherent racism and notions of superiority persist till this day. It pleases me that Mel Gibson has decided to take the plunge and damm the consequences, for the truth shall forever remain constant. Why are some afraid of the truth? Is it to perpetuate the lie of superiority that was the primary cause of his execution? Is it fear of loosing privilege and patronage?
Who are we to judge...
Knowing Mel Gibson I am sure it is a masterpiece of Creativity and Art that we are dealing with here.
Ahhh, first the ONE and now the PASSION...
We are slowly but surely getting there.
Its all good.
Peace.

jesusfreak
In case anyone didn't know, "The Passion" has been renamed "The Passion of Christ." It is being distributed by Newmarket (Memento, Whale Rider, etc.) and will open on Ash Wednesday, 2/25/04.

Yeah, I heard that the church is all upset because Mel Gibson plays Jesus, and they don't think that he's an appropriate choice to play the part.

jesusfreak
I don't know if you're joking, but if you aren't, Mel isn't playing Jesus, Jim Caviezel is. Mel is co-writer, producer, and director of the film, but he doesn't act in it. (except the hand you see put the nail in Jesus' hand in the trailer--that's Mel's hand)
