i've come up with a theory, which combines stuff from several theories into one whole. i will share it with you, see what you think.
the time is late 22nd century earth, which is controlled by machines. Zion is the last remaining city. The Matrix is a virtual world seemingly created by the machines to use the human race as their power supply. so far so good. HOWEVER, here is the twist.
what if - it was all an experiment, orchestrated by some sort of superior being, a god, advanced alien, whatever you want. this being created earth, the human race, made them evolve into beings capable of creating A.I., which would eventually enslave humanity in the way that they have.
this supreme being does this, JUST to see if his creation could one day 'exceed the parameters of their creation', such as acquiring capabilities their creator has (such as the things which some people refer to as 'metaphysical' powers).
why have i thought up this theory? i read another theory somewhere on this forum, of someone who believes Neo has the same powers in the real world as he had in the Matrix, because he came to the realisation that every reality, even if it is not virtual, can be manipulated by the mind.
let's say the being that orchestrated it all, is God. now, he would want to coordinate the whole thing a bit -> Architect (there's no denying the similarity between the two). plus, he has some other 'people' keeping him informed of how things are going -> Seraph (an angel).
it seems the experiment was a success, since Neo has gone beyond what humans are supposed to be capable of, in that he made the squiddies shortcircuit with his mind. his mind has evolved far past normal 'evolutionary proportions'. he has become some sort of higher being himself.
i know this is not what the wachowski brothers have in mind, but i can imagine something like this being possible (if you believe in the existence of supreme beings, which i myself do not by the way). it's just a theory i have come up with.
