The respect thread of K'

This respect thread is dedicated to our "handsome whitehaired adaptanble flame", K' (Kay Dash, technically K Prime or Krizalid Prime), who's the main protagonist in NESTS saga of KOF (KOF'99-KOF 2001).

Notes:
"Sister" RT dedicated to NeoSun comics version of K'

_______________________________
Who's K'?
That description fits him perfectly-
He has the power, the courage, the speed, the style and he has the combinations and the counter moves that make his defense almost impossible to breach. This guy can hand almost anyone’s ass to him.

Combining his awesome fighting skills (he uses his own personal fighting style, which is described in games as "pure violence" but in many ways it's a tribute to Jeet Kune Do- hence the stance he takes when the opponent has finished talking before a fight in KOF 2000 (Which according to Bruce's book, it is the Ready Stance). Also some of the moves/move names, such as K's One Inch, are obvious references to Bruce Lee) with impressive control over mystical flames of Kusanagi implanted into him, as well as the strength and the speed, K' was created by NESTS to become "the strongest human". But due to the failure of experiment (and the thing that K' was really skinny and weak child at the age of 10, when gene transfusion probably happened) he didn't become "the KOF's Cap America" immediately- K Prime had to prove his superiority over the "perfect model", Krizalid, who appeared to be cloned from "prototype model", K'. Though he went through intense training and probably some genetic modifying of his body (the first is probably reason why he hates regular physical exersises and the second is probably the reason why he looked like 20 years old or something at the age of 16 (his first appearance in KOF'99).
Technically K' isn't clone of Kyo Kusanagi but The term cloning used in KOF is done by extracting the DNA and inject it into a cell then fertilise it inside a big metallic cylinder (K9999 was born likewise) Although K' is being called a clone of Kyo, he technically is not because he was injected with Kyo's DNA rather than born as one.

Some people noticed the similarities between his history and Wolverine's but the only thing which is similiar is that both of them are victims of weird experiments who had their memories erased for some time, but eventually ot them back.
Basically K' is the youngest fighter in KOF elite, known for his incredible ability to adapt to the curcumstances of the fight as well as use his opponents' mistakes against them and improvise (Chain Drive move is an example of that) He won his first KOF at the age of 16 and after that did it twice, so he's three times KOF champion by now.
K's best friend and longtime partner is Maxima, canadian cyborg with sideburns. Psychologically they are perfect complitments to each other- light-hearted and easy-going Maxima and unsociable K'.

Profile:
Age: unknown, estimated age at KOF2003- 20 years old (16-17 in his first appearance)
Birthplace:unknown (probably his origin is connected to Ireland, since Krizalid, who was given at least part of K's memories, believed himself to be Irish)
Height: 183 cm
Weight: 65 kg
Blood type: N/A (A according to some sources)
Hobbies: None (in KOF Bible 99 motorcycles were listed as his hobby, so probably he shares it with his best friend)
Favorite Food: Beef jerky
Favorite sport: none (hates regular training/physical exersises, probably due to intense training in NESTS)
Most valuble: nothing
Hates the most: KOF tournaments, sweets, orders, regular training
Fighting Style: Pure violence (can also be considered an abstract version of Jeet Kune Do)+ pyrokinesis
Known Relatives: Best friend/Comrade in arms Maxima (according to KOF2003 sory of K' team, Maxima is also sort of legal guardian of K'), elder sister Whip, adopted younger sister (treated like that but not much like true girlfriend with sexual relationship etc)/reversed clone Kula Diamond, clone Krizalid.

History
K' was a normal human being before the cloning operation, though nothing is known of his life at that time (the memories of Krizalid allow to suggest that K' and Whip are of Irish origin). As a child, K' was taken away by the NESTS agents, as the experiment subject for the prototype. He would be infused with Kusanagi power, and then the NESTS cartel would prove how feasible it was to inject the immense Kusanagi power in a human being (obviously, the results were to be expected: normal human beings were unable to control the power, and thus, the neccesity of a special glove). NESTS also altered K's memory, and the only thing K' remembers of his past life is a little girl that kept calling him "brother" and cried out for him. But this memory only exists in dreams now.

The NESTS Saga

After activation, K' is sent out by his master, Krizalid, to join with his partner Maxima, and team up with Benimaru Nikaido and Shingo Yabuki in order to enter the King of Fighters tournament and collect battle data from the fighters of the competition in order to activate the Kyo Kusanagi clones around the world. Disgusted by such petty orders, K' joins Benimaru and Shingo with little, if at all, interest in the King of Fighters tournament. He didn't even talk with Maxima a lot, either. He was just a clone on a mission, and soon, many would fear the new beast of fire.

K' demonstrated his capacity as a fighter in the tournament, using interesting variations to the Kusanagi crimson flame power. Based on his sheer violent spirit, K' became a force to be reckoned with. Soon enough, he jumped to be the most sighted fighter of the tournament, not only by his cruelty and quickness, but by his totally different attitude and techniques from Kyo. K' doesn't mind any of it, and soon enough, he guides Benimaru and Shingo to the place of reunion set by Krizalid, in a sewer. The sewer drains to reveal a secret elevator that takes the whole team to the underground base of Krizalid. Somehow, K' sensed something exceptional would happen that day.

K' watches with little amusement as Krizalid does battle with Benimaru and Shingo. He knew that their attempts would be futile, but why did they keep trying? K' felt something exceptional in those persons, something he had failed to sense before: human compassion. He knew that the plot of Krizalid was to extract enough data from Benimaru and Shingo in order to activate the clones. So, as Benimaru was about to deliver a devastating blow, K' tried to stop him, to no avail. Krizalid had finished his process, and thanks K'. K' refuses to follow orders for Krizalid anymore, but Krizalid then reveals that K' himself is a clone. When in doubt, Krizalid asks K' about his parents or childhood, to which K' can not reply. However, one final data is amiss: the killer instinct. Krizalid asks K' if he desires it, but K' is not so sure anymore. However, before he can know it, Krizalid's final rampage is already in its fullest.

K' fights Krizalid alongside Maxima with unexpected feelings. He felt both excited and angry. He was tired of living under the shadow of Krizalid, and he would show him who manages the Kusanagi flames best! K' puts it all into his techniques, and manages to make Krizalid pass a hard time. However, it is not enough to defeat Krizalid. The end seems near, when all of a sudden, a crimson flame blast puts Krizalid down. The assailant was no other than the original Kyo Kusanagi! Embittered byt the knowledge that he is a clone, K' fights Kyo, finding in him the true challenge he was looking for. But before the fight against his original can conclude, Shingo intervenes. At this time, a steel doors slam between them, separating both K' and Maxima from Kyo. A voice from above thunders in K's ears, asking him if he would prefer to live the life of a normal human. K' demands he shut up, shouting, "I'll do as I please!" The omnipotent voice of the NESTS cartel dooms both K' and Maxima to a swift death, as they are surrounded by the Ikari extermination squad that have already infiltrated the facility.

However, K' is not the one to be impressed by such toys. At the limit of his capabilities, K' unleashes the remaining force he has to blow several soldiers away, making his glove collapse. Now unable to stop his hand from flaming, he is aided by Maxima in escaping the collapsed base. There is still much to do for K', at the beginning of a new millennium, and a new life.

During a whole year, K' and his friend Maxima have been running away from two parties: first, the Ikari Warriors, who have been hunting them as fugitive criminals, and second, the NESTS cartel, who wishes to exact punishment for the traitors. K' has been on the run ever since, and managed to get away fighting from several precarious situations. K' thinks he should enter the next King of Fighters tournament, in the year 2000, in order to clean up his image, and eliminate his persecutors at the same time. However, he can't blow his cover by teaming up with Benimaru and Shingo again, so the situation gets even more complicated. It is then when K' is met by an enigmatic woman called Vanessa, who is accompanied by a jolly Mexican wrestler called Ramon. She offers to team up with them. K' doesn't trust Vanessa at all, but if you want to beat the lions, you might as well go in the den with them.

And so, K' gets another chance of proving his own worth, aside from the fact that he was just a Kyo clone. However, during the last few nights, K' has been having some weird nightmares: in each nightmare, a little girl shouts out for him in a lonely background. She claims to be his sister, but K' remembers nothing about her. What could all this mean? This further fuels K's rage to burn every poor commoner that cruised his way. This motivates K' and his partners to once again return to Southtown for the final encounter. K' feels a lot of deja vu once he enters Southtown, and feels deeply connected to it. K' and his teammates walk through the docks in order to arrive at the factory zone, where they are supposed to fight their final match. It is then when K' senses a cold wind in the air, something that makes him feel full of fear. K' bids Maxima and the others to hurry on to the factory zone, and that he will stop the threat here. Maxima tries to talk K' out of it, but K' activates the flames in his hand. Maxima understands, and leads Vanessa and Ramon out.

K' shouts for the intruder to show himself. Oddly enough, an innocent young girl with long, chestnut hair, and a similar outfit to K's, appears in front of K'. She claims to be the "anti-K'", and suddenly activates her powers, enshrouding the area in ice as her hair becomes an equally icy blue. She proceeds to attack K' with attacks identical to his own. K' has a hard time fending off the girl's ice attacks, as he tries to counter with his own fire attacks. Each attack counters the other, and the battle begins to wear out both of them. K' wonders who this girl really is, but by wandering off in his own thoughts, K' is blasted by a full-fledged ice blast from the girl. The memory of the young girl calling out for K' flashes in his mind again. Could this girl really be his sister? Desperate to know the truth, K' invokes a wave of fury, and creates an inmense raging fire aura around him. He gathers them to blast the young woman with a final flaming attack. K' drops to his knees, spent and exhausted.

To his surprise, the young woman is still standing. Burned badly, but with a kind smile on her face. The girl introduces herself as Kula, and she has been sent here to stop Zero, a NESTS agent that has become power-drunk, and intends to destroy his superiors with the help of the Zero Cannon. K' doesn't understand anything, but he gets animated when Kula tells him to go look for his sister, since she is looking for him. With new enthusiasm, K' rushes to aid his friends in the abandoned factory.

When K' arrives, he notices how Zero has already dealt with most of his partners, and even former partners. Zero notices K', and bluffs about how K' is in such a bad shape. K' realizes this will be a tough match, but is further simplified by the fact Lin has poisoned him previously, and Maxima and the rest had already worn him out. With this in mind, K' calls upon the remaining ounces of strength, and fires Zero to oblivion. This unleashes the fury of Zero, who now intends to fry K' and the other fighters with the Zero Cannon. K' is dumbfounded, since he is too weak to attempt anything else. Nothing to worry about, though, as NESTS itself takes care of Zero via two female agents. With a bad feeling about all this, K' leads his friends to safety before the Zero Cannon destroys Southtown completely.

On their way out, K' finds out that Ramon and Vanessa were lost, but there was no time to stay around and think. Suddenly, a familiar figure appears in front of him. Is that the girl in his dreams? She seems older, but once she calls out K's name, there is no doubt: it is K's sister, and it turns out to be Whip, a member of the Ikari Warriors, K's persecutors. K', along with Maxima, escape from the devastated Southtown amidst a beautiful meteor shower. A beautiful show to eclipse the disaster. K's decides to willingly discard his protective glove. Maxima warns him, but by taking a glimpse at Whip, he promptly tears it off. To everyone's surprise, K's flaming power does not go out of control. He has finally learned how to control the legendary crimson flames of the Kusanagi. With a smile on his face, K' burns in anticipation of his final match with his former bosses, the NESTS.

Throughout his trips to several NESTS bases located around the world, accompanied by his sister Whip and by Maxima, K' finds something very suspicious in his findings: the bases they have tried to raid for such a long time are now deserted. Why is it that no one was there? K' suspects that someone is tracking their steps. During another ambush to yet another abandoned NESTS building, K' and the others stumble upon Lin, who has also been on the track of NESTS in search of the traitor to his clan, Ron. Whip suggests taking him in to enter the next King of Fighters tournament, where NESTS will finally reveal themselves to the world. K' couldn't care less about Lin, but he was rather curious of what NESTS planned to do with trying to go public after destroying a whole city.

K', who still wears his special red glove out of sheer tradition (he no longer conceives himself without it), once again makes a smashing appearance in the King of Fighters tournament along the people whom he really cares about (except Lin). This is finally the chance K' has been waiting for all these years: the chance to exact revenge on NESTS. He didn't care who got in his way, everyone should fall! K's burning desire for victory allowed him to gather a strong spirit, and be able to classify to the finals, which would take place atop a blimp. K' noticed that something was terribly wrong the moment he boarded the blimp, and was proven right when a familiar figure appeared to challenge on the ship's bridge: the original Zero had came to defy them to a fight to the very end!

K' had to deal with Zero just as he did with his clone one year ago. While his friends dealt with Zero's companions, K' focused on trashing Zero. Even though the original Zero had a lot more power and skill than his clone, the techniques were almost the same, so K' took this as his cue to finish Zero once and for all. The defeated Zero accepts his defeat as a true warrior, and motions for the team to continue. The blimp, which had turned into a rocket ship of sorts, docked on a station in the heavens, and suddenly, the ship began to crumble. K' and the others hurry to board the station, not before giving a final glimpse at the man that he thought was a mere NESTS underdog, but was proud enough to let his enemies leave before they went down with him.

After boarding the station, K' notices that they have arrived at outer space! This should be the main HQ of NESTS, without doubt: a place which could not be discovered even if you scouted every inch of the world. K' knew he would meet his true destiny here, and he indeed found himself face to face with the president of NESTS himself in his own throne room! K' growled and cursed the leader of NESTS and his two companions, an attractive blonde secretary, and some tall man dressed in a cloak. The old man in the center seemed calm and didn't move at all, even under the pressure of K's insults. While K' was addressing the old man, the young man in the cloak grabbed the president by the head, and vaporized him! K' was surprised to realize that the lackey of the president (Igniz, the CEO of NESTS) was actually conspiring to overthrow the president and take his rightful place as the new god of the humans.

Igniz arrogantly tells K' about his plans and the project that involved the usage of the DNA of Kyo Kusanagi. Krizalid, Kula, and K' himself were the results of several experiments, and the final product turned out to be another clone called K9999, who was a completely artificial product of NESTS' technology. Then he confesses that he had to erase the memory data of K' so he could fight at his whole capacity, but since he thought it would be fun to watch a clone to actually have full awareness, granted K's memories back to him. With the memories of his childhood and his family now burning deep within his mind, K' stands poised to return the favor to Igniz and put an end to his twisted plot. But Igniz has already begun to set his plan in motion, as he summons all the inhuman power he had hiding deep within him (as a result of the fighting data that was collected the past few years), and challenges K' to do or die!

A cruel battle ensued, a fight which K' couldn't seem to win, terribly overpowered by Igniz and his incredible power. When all seemed lost, Kyo, Iori, and the other main heroes of the King of Fighters tournament arrived to get rid of Igniz and NESTS once and for all. With the help of the flames of Kyo and Iori, K' managed to channel a huge flame blast that overpowered Igniz himself and made the whole room tremble. A defeated and embittered Igniz slowly condemned all of his clones, and even tagged Whip as a useless clone herself. Amidst K's surprise, Igniz climbs a set of stairs to where two pillars were located. Since the humans would deny the existence of a god among them, they would have to be cursed with a demon instead. With those words, Igniz places his hands on the pillars, and sends the whole space station on a crash course towards Earth! As a huge door closes the passage to where the maniacal Igniz was, K' attempts to make a hasty retreat.

As NESTS space station begins to plummet through Earth's atmosphere, the building heat seems to guarantee death. However, Kula releases all of her ice powers at this time, allowing them to endure the passage through the atmosphere. After escaping from the space station which crashed into the ocean, K' swims towards land, and encounters Kula along the way, entirely exhausted. Their differences put aside, he helps her to the nearby shore, exhausted and wounded. Still, he managed to go in Kula's rescue, fighting off K9999 and Angel, who were trying to finish her off, as ordered by Igniz. K' manages to drive a furious K9999 and Angel away, and promises that if K9999 ever messed with him again, he would know who was the true "beast of fire."

With all danger set aside, Lin leaves the team, continuing his search for Ron. Maxima tells K' that he will be leaving as well, to pay respect to the grave of his friend killed by NESTS. When Maxima asks what K' will do now, K' is uncertain. However, Whip tells him that they have a debt to repay, and motions towards Kula. K' and Kula took a stroll down the beach. He wanted to know if NESTS was dead for sure, and what would K9999 do next? His eyes of sadness and confusion were hidden behind his trademark shades, but Kula could read right through them. Kula walks up to K', asking what would be in store for them now that NESTS is gone. K' just limits himself to respond that a new life would soon dawn on them, a life where they could make their own decisions, and be free from personal revenge from NESTS, as the morning sun begins to light on the young biological weapons.

The ASH Saga

After the fall of NESTS, K' and Maxima had continued to live out their lives in a vagabond manner. Whip returned to her friends with the Ikari Warriors, and Kula remained with her guardians from NESTS, Dianna and Foxy. However, in 2003, a new King of Fighters tournament was announced. K' had no interest, loathing the tournament, but was approached by Chin Gensai of the Pscyho Soldiers. Chin, sensing an evil power brooding, requested K' enter the tournament. K' reacted angrily, but was calmed by Maxima, who convinced him to consider the matter. Not long after, K' sister called, requesting that they join a team with her, under orders from her commanding officer, Heidern. K' relented, and entered the tournament. While K' found nothing of personal interest in the tournament, he did encounter several villainous figures that filled him with a sense of foreboding. He cast these feelings to the side, but no sooner had he done this then his flames began to run out of control for the first time in years. Once he finally managed to get his powers under control, Maxima asked him if his glove was malfunctioning. However, K' replied that the problem didn't lie with the glove, but at the root of Kyo's powers. Though his meaning was unclear, his interest in the unfolding events was piqued.

As the next tournament arrived, Whip joined the Ikari Warrior once more, taking the place of her superior, Leona, who was unable to participate. At Whip's suggestion, Kula was called and asked to join K's team, which would again participate in the tournament under orders of Heidern. During the tournament, a frightening figure named Magaki was revealed as the host. However, after Magaki's death, K' and the Ikari Warriors brought biological samples of him to Heidern. At the debriefing that followed on the Ikari Warriors plane, there was an attack, which ceased when Heidern agreed to leave with two of the assailants. This is all of the storyline involving K' at this time.

KOF XI
K' Team

"Far beyond the mountain, happiness is what man fears.
A groan cannot convey the tears of those who walk alone."
There was a small public park across the street from the parking lot of a huge hospital, and a young girl was there playing, all alone.

"Look at that girl, Diana," Kula said to the tall woman standing next to her. It seemed the girl was always playing down there, or at least, at every opportunity. Her alabaster skin only accented her extremely thin body, and she regularly spent her time there on the swing.

"Would you like to be friends with her, Kula?" asked Diana gently, and Kula nodded her assent.

Tomorrow, Kula decided, she would call out to the little girl. She always seemed so lonely. In that, Kula felt she could sympathize. She had felt lonely every single day in the last three years. The girl was at the hospital regularly, but who knew what was wrong with her. But no matter... they would be friends, and Candy would be there with them in spirit.

The next day, the little girl did not show up as she normally did. Kula sat on the swings alone, barely rocking back and forth. There was no sign of the girl approaching from the hospital... and as Kula looked up in the sky above, there was a thin line of vapor winding its way up and out of sight. Eventually, it faded away and was no more.

Diana looked at Kula gravely. "I'm led to understand that she died yesterday, Kula."
"Yeah," Kula sighed. "I suspected as much."

Diana leaned against the supports of the swing and continued. "She went through many different operations. There were treatments that could have helped her live longer, but she wouldn't go through with them."

"What kind of treatments?"
"Machines, mostly," the tall, raven-haired woman replied. "She would have to stay hooked up to them to keep her heart beating."

Kula looked puzzled. "...So she didn't want to live anymore?"
"I think there was more to it than that."

This was met with a shake of the head. "I'd choose to go on living, no matter what," said Kula. "Even if they had to make me all machines. I could even handle being like Candy, if that's what it took to keep me alive..."

She looked directly at Diana and asked, "So what makes me different from that little girl?"

But Diana had no answer for her. Undaunted, Kula pressed on. "Come on, Diana. What makes me different from her?"

***

"I'm getting back some of my memories," said K'.

But what had returned was hazy and impossible to make sense of. Moreover, who could tell if they were real memories, or ones that had been implanted into his mind? Why did he go on fighting? Though he had never been to this blink-and-you'll-miss-it town before, it all looked so familiar.
He walked around for a bit, and the impressions kept coming to him. But most of these were neither the ancient memories that man had told him about, nor of his own past. It was of the things that he truly did remember on his own.

NESTS, KOF, Maxima, Kula, Kyo Kusanagi, Ash Crimson, Mukai.... If his true memories came back to him, what would happen to his memories of all these people and things? Then he scornfully clucked his tongue and shook his head. "Bah, this isn't getting me anywhere."

He figured he could leave the worrying to Maxima. For now, he would be content to give as good as he got from any of them... Ash, Kyo, Mukai or anyone.

As he walked down an unfamiliar street, he looked up at the sky, and saw a thin stream of smoke working its way upward. The clouds, too, seemed familiar to him.

"So, where did this memory come from?" he thought to himself.

***

As he stood on the balcony of his room, Maxima watched the sky turn colors from orange to a rich, vivid blue. Though he had quit smoking years ago, the old habit caused him to unconsciously reach a hand into his pocket for his cigarettes.

Looking down, he could see K', who had been wandering idly about the town all day. It looked like he was finally coming back to settle in. Maxima stared thoughtfully at his friend, thinking of all that had happened to him. The power of Kyo Kusanagi had been forcibly made a part of his body. This left him with ties to that occult figure, Orochi. Then there was Mukai and crew, who seemed dead-set on acquiring Orochi's power.

Perhaps it was possible for a man to change his own destiny. To stand against all odds and survive. Perhaps there would be more for the so-called "Second Flame of the Kusanagi."

"What's with the strange look, Maxima?" K' asked as he entered the room and stepped out on the balcony. "Something wrong?"

"Nah, nothing important," Maxima replied, scratching his head.

"'Far beyond the mountain, happiness is what man fears'..." muttered K' to himself.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

K' gave a wan smile and said, "I think it means that happiness is further away and more fleeting than a wisp of smoke."

KOF Maximum Impact

KOF MI is set at the alternate universe though some sources put it as "a few years afrer Ash saga". There's some controverses with major storyline (Southtown wasn't destructed, Iori uses his pyrokinetic powers in KOF MI2 etc), so K'-related stuff from KOF MI and KOF MI2 will be posted separately.

K's intro story from KOF MI

Personal Story

A downtown corner.
A series of tenements line the streets that look to be 40 or so years old.
The sinless voices of children bounce playfully off the tenement walls.
K' sits at a corner where the shadow of a building blocks out the sun.
In the darkness this deep shadow makes, the right hand of K' seems to glow red.
"This place gives me the willies."
As he mutters this, K' focuses his attention on some children enjoying some hoops.
"Just how long do you plan to hang around here?"
He bangs his fist into the wall against which he leans, a futile attempt to lash out at his irritation.
The resulting pain shoots up his arm, the only thing seeming to provide fleeting respite.
The cause of his consternation arises from his inability to contact Maxima for two days.
"I'm out of here - I've got promises to keep."
"Whatever," K' replies curtly as he stares blankly out of the bay window by which he sits.
"We're leaving when I get back. Until then gather up your things and stay put."
K' turns his gaze from outside the window to face Maxima.
"Is something going down that I should know about?"
"Uh, I'm not sure. But there's something I have to check on."
"You be good."
With that final message, Maxima was gone.
Two days have passed since then.
K', returning alone to their room, sees Maxima has not returned and plops himself down on the sofa.
He stretches out his right hand, staring up at the ceiling between the gaps in his fingers.
A cloud of loneliness enshrouds him.
"I'm back! And I've got ice cream for my good little boy."
The door bangs open along with the booming voice.
K' jumps up startled and snaps.
"This is no time for ice cream."
"Act like this butter pecan and chill, dude! We'll split after we scarf this down."
"I'm all set now," snarls K'.
But in his hand, he holds Maxima's chilly treat of a souvenir.

KOF MI2 (KOF 2006) personal story

A crimson flame flashes in almost pitch-black darkness.
This is followed by the hail of gunfire and muzzle flashes in its direction, but it’s too late.
The gun-wielding assassins fall in an instant, wailing their dying shrieks as they succumb to the swift and silent K’.
“Annoying punks”.
Episodes like these have already become less battles than work for K’.
The combat capabilities of K’, created by NESTS to be the mightiest human, have become unstoppable to normal humans.
K’ looks back to see a giant with steel body disposing of the remaining assassins.
“Just who are you clowns?”
K’ asks peevishly as he kicks motionless assassin with the tip of his foot.
However there’s no answer. The unconscious assassin, his face hidden by night-vision goggles, is already on his way to death.
“Nuts”
Maxima shortles as he hears K’ voice his annoyance.
“Why are you taking it out on him, K’? If you’re expecting to interrogate the guys, you should take it easier on them. At any rate, it looks like we have another syndicate craving our NESTS technology”.
Maxima sits down on a pile of rusting steel bars, checks the ammo of the guns in his arms, and starts some light repairs.
K’ surveys the interior of the once again peaceful abandoned factory, checks for remaining enemies, then approaches Maxima.
“What’s going on?”
“Huh? What do you mean by what’s going on?”
“Stop yanking my chain. There’s something wrong with you, isn’t there?”
When K’ blurts this out, the assuring smile always on Maxima’s face disappears.
“If there weren’t, you’d have easily disposed of these clowns. But today you looked like antique out there. So give me the real skinny.”
The reason why the usually independent K’ has stuck with Maxima this long is not so much an extension of their alliance to destroy NESTS but because K’ believes he is the only guy capable on protecting his back.
So it was only natural he noticed his “partner’s” moves were less than optimum.
Maxima, having been gazing up at K’, looks away and gives a weary, self-deprecating laugh.
“I can’t hide it, can I?”
“So there is something wrong?”
“I haven’t exactly been in tip top shape these days.”
“Get to it, canucklehead.”
K’ comments as he pricks up his eyebrow impatiently.
“You’re a cyborg, aren’t you?”
“Cyborg, human- when you’re down, you’re down, dude”
Maxima laughs feebly as he puts a hand to his chest.
“It appears my reactor is a little out of whack”
“Come again”.
The reactor- what powers his 80% mechanized body is a miniaturized nuclear reactor called the “Maxima reactor”. Or, in more familiar terms, the very heart of Maxima now.
If the reactor is acting up, this means that the situation is far more severe than an armor leg malfunction. Maxima points to his temple and continues:
“I have a handy thing in my head: a self-diagnosis program that checks every mechanism in my body. And according to that, a completely unforeseen glitch has occurred. Having found it early is the silver lining in the cloud, but even I don’t know what is all means”.
“How can you fix it?”
“If there were some other problem, I could fix it myself. But this is my heart. The whole ball of wax. Ever heard of a doctor who could operate on his own heart?”
“How about letting Whip do it?”
“Whip?”
K’ nods mutely, but Maxima can only sigh and shake his head.
“That..wouldn’t work”
“Why not?”
“It’s not that simple. We’re not talking about repaired some busted radio here. You need to ascertain exactly what’s wrong with me and repair me while I’m completely deactivated.
And to do that you need proper facilities, so we need a real pro to fix me up.”
“A real professional, you say? Well, then, that makes things a little easier then, doesn’t it?”
K’, leaning up against a dingy wall, unfold his arms and begins to pace towards his pal.
“All we have to do is have the reactor’s creator fix it.”
“Professor Makishima?”
“If there’s someone to do the job, he’s the guy, isn’t he?”
“I guess Dr. Makishima is really the only guy who can do it, if you want to be precise”.
“Then enough chit chat- all we have to do is get him”.
“That’s true, but do you even know where he is?”
“How should I know? Unless you want to die, start thinking. Why have such a super brain if you’re not going to use it?”
“Don’t hold back. Tell me what you really think. Jeesh!”
Maxima’s usual intrepid smile returns as he scratches his head and gets up, ready for action. K’ thrusts his hands in his pockets and mutters as he walks away with hunched shoulders.
“Having to toss you on the scrapheap would be a tragedy”
“Did you say something, K’?”
“Nope. Nothing”

So as you can see, K', Maxima, Kula and Whip lead a wagabong lifestyle until they found out that Maxima's nuclear reactor has a glitch and K's best friend can basically turn into a walking nuke at any moment.
While searching for professor Makishima they found out that the professor have been kidnapped and that the kidnappers have something to do with the announced KOF.

Those searches were shown in the episode of KOF:Another Day anime called "In the dark". Though K's anime version (just lkie Dante's one) is relatively lame, it's Maxima who really shines in that episode while K' only performs his Iron Trigger and Knee Assault moves on Leona.

Official English dub, though K's voice actor is a bit lame there.

Some of K's moves (gifs are from Sado-sama's site)

(please log in to view the image)

K's trademark Chain Drive SDM/LDM (creative use of glasses, Blackout "teleportation" (though it's more like speedup to something like 350 mph speed than true teleportation) and just fiery pwnage.

(please log in to view the image)

K's Crow Bite- great anti-air move.
