Meet Walter Sullivan, antagonist of Silent Hill 4: The Room and the most screwed up guy in the SH universe. That's quite a feat right there.
At the tender age of about a minute old, he was abandoned by his parents and left to die in their aprtment. He was however found and taken to a hospital where he was later taken from by an orphanage. An orphanage run by The Order which you may know as Silent Hill's cult. Remember the whole birthing god and bloody churches and whatnot? Yeah, great group to raise children.
In the orphanage he laughed and played in-between having his friends die, drinking water with leeches in it and eating his friends who had died in a stew prepared by those who ran the orphanage.
So after all this Walter grew up to be a healthy, well-adjusted adult who attended college. This healthy, well-adjusted part was only slightly marred by his mass murder of 10 people and removing their hearts. However he was caught and taken to prison where he killed himself. Now this is the mark of a badass. He didn't die with some pussy method like a gun or pills. He killed himself with a spoon to his Corotid Artery.
There was a method to his madness, though: The 21 Sacraments.
"The First Sign
And God said,
At the time of fullness, cleanse the world with my rage.
Gather forth the White Oil, the Black Cup and the Blood of the Ten Sinners.
Prepare for the Ritual of the Holy Assumption."
So he was killing those people to complete the first part of this Ritual, the Holy Assumption. However he was caught and killed himself before completion. Luckily his spirit remained and it dug up his corpse, dragged it to room 302 and performed the Holy Assumption.
So now Spirit Walter has superpowers after the Holy Assumption which are vaguely defined as the "Power of Heaven" and better explained here:
"After he did the ritual of the Holy
Assumption, other worlds began to force their way
into his universe and it began to swell horribly. But his universe is different than ours – it has limits. And in the limits of that universe,
he rules as a king."
"Through the Ritual of the Holy Assumption, he built a world. It exists in a space separate from the world of our Lord. More accurately, it is within, yet without the Lord's world. Unlike the world of our Lord, it is a world in extreme flux. Unexpected doors or walls, moving floors, odd creatures, a world only him can
control... Anyone swallowed up by that world will live there for eternity, undying. They will haunt that realm as a spirit."
Essentially, Walter lives in the world he's created but he can snatch anyone he chooses from the real world and kill them in his world. This power is mainly used on the city of Ashfield but it extends outside those limits as one victim was found in a forest outside of the city and Henry is told by Jospeh, a guy who knows basically more than anyone about Walter and his powers, that he can find Henry anywhere he goes.
So the game goes by and Walter creates several worlds for you and you get through them. You finally fight Walter's corpse and pierce it with the Eight Spears, basically a plot device. You then kill Walter's spirit and the two heroes live happily ever after.
However, that's only one ending.
I prefer this one.
Walter and Little Walter sit happily in the possessed Room 302 as the rest of the city plunges into Hell.
So there's Wally. Crazy, traumatized and one of the strongest beings in Silent Hill.
