It's spelled as Gastly by the way, not Ghastly, and according to one of the Pokedex entries, "It can envelop an opponent of any size and cause suffocation".
well to my knowledge its impossible to actually "kill" a pokemon (as far as i know no pokemon has ever been killed) so all ghastly has to do is wait (although he may be knocked out) for itachi's disease to kick in
There are whole graves of Pokemon in each game. And you even have to fight Marowak's ghost in Red/Blue. So they can die. In the anime, I don't remember.
But Gastly wins.
