Take the Washington Irving classic The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, give it a complete overhaul, not to mention Tim Burton directing and his best bud Johnny Depp as the title character, and you got a winner on your hands.

Instead of a wussy schoolteacher, Crane is now a wussy police constable in the New York, circa 1799. However, not everyone is open to Crane's scientific methods of police work, so his boss sends him to Sleepy Hollow, an upstate hamlet which has been plagued with murders, the killer's modus operandi is death by beheading.

Upon arriving in Sleepy Hollow, he catches the fancy of Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci), much to the dismay of her main suitor Brom Van Brunt (Casper Van Dien). It is there that Crane gets the full story. The murderer in question is the Headless Horseman (Christopher Walken, Ray Park in the action scenes), originally a Hessian mercenary who had been killed during the Revolutionary War when he got a bit stab-happy on both friend and foe.

Now, the Horseman has resurfaced, looking for his missing head, and is killing off key members inside the town. Add the fact that Crane has personal demons of his own, he is in for one hell of a ride.

As he investigates the murders, he find out that the one responsible was Katrina's stepmother, Lady Van Tassel, her motives being solely for revenge (she was the one who had witnessed the beheading of the Hessian), and plans on eliminating the Van Tassels in order to gain their immense fortune, forcing Ichabod to nut up and save the girl (thus, executing the tried and true duty-for-booty maneuver), and returning to New York just in time for the New Year with Young Masbath in tow.

Sleepy Hollow rules.

Trivia: Holy shit. Three Sith Lords and three Harry Potter alumni have parts in this flick. No lie. Christopher Lee (Count Dooku/Darth Tyrannus), Ray Park (Darth Maul) and Ian McDiarmid (Darth Tyrannus/The Emperor). From Harry Potter, Michael Gambon (Prof. Dumbledore post-Chamber), Miranda Richardson (Rita Skeeter), and Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon).

Oh, and Depp and Burton worked together on seven films, Sleepy Hollow being the third movie, and Alice in Wonderland being the most recent.
