Part of why I've been gone (the section not really suitable for OTF)
It is not very often that I make a "serious" thread, but this is one such time:
As almost everyone should know, my real name isn't Dave. At time of making the name, I don't think I knew anyone by that name, and it was only through lack of imagination then I decided upon it. It was only to download an attachment, so I didn't care. However, I came back later, and the rest is history.
Anywho, since making "dave123", I have met two Dave's in real life, both at my school. One was an American in my year, and the other was in my psychology class in the year above me. Why was he in my psychology class if he's older than me? Because at the start of the year, he fell victim to cancer, and that left him unable to finish the year off.
Thankfully, he recovered, and restarted his courses only a year behind, thusly he was in my class. Because of the year difference, I never really got to know him: but he was a great, friendly, smart guy, and I'm certain he had a bright future ahead of him. He did well in psychology despite after his poor performance, and carried it on with me into the second year.
A few weeks in, and Dave stopped turning up to lesson. Then shortly after this, we were informed that his cancer had returned, and you can guess what happened.
As such, I did not really feel like returning to KMC for a while with a name such as this... it just didn't seem right.
I'm not going to use this as an opportunity to help a good cause: I considered auctioning my name, where the person who donates the most money to a charity will get the right to pick my next username. But instead, I'll leave it up to you guys to decide if you will donate any money - and also give a big thank you to those who do support good causes, and don't need incentives like this to give.
This isn't the only reason for my absence - and the other reasons are a lot more positive! So don't think I didn't come back because this got me seriously down or anything.
You guys had to go without me for a few months, and I'm sure you got over it pretty quickly. But Dave's parents have lost him forever, and I can't even begin to imagine how that feels.
Cancer sucks. It really does. I know so many people who have lost or are losing a loved one to cancer, and very few of them saw even close to natural lifespans. But for someone this young, that's deeply upsetting, which is why I'm genuinely sorry to hear that.
I donate occasionally, I'd probably do it more often if I could afford to, but I suppose a lot of people say that.

I have two direct debits each month, one to heart disease research, the other for cancer research. I used to give to amnesty, but the hard sell tactics in town centres annoy me!
