Well for most part many middle eastern economies are hardly what one would call super strong as it is (beyond the likes of Saudi Arabia which even the US owes a lot of money to.)

But certainly, the loss of oil would have an impact, but lets look at the middle east - first it was the cradle of civilisation, it was where some great empires arose, it was a vital part of the Western Empires (Rome, Greece), then the likes of the Persians and the East Roman Empire. Then large parts of it where important colonial holdings. The Middle East was important and powerful long before oil, though often they didn't benefit directly. If oil goes their are things they can fall back on, there always will be - it wont be doom for those oil dependant economies, what it will mean is change for them. Could be hard to change, but the Middle East has shown it is tenacious and can over come, with time, almost anything.

Frankly, if a new fuel is found to replace oil, the difference will be so enormous globally that it wouldn't make much sense just to say it will change the Middle East. You'd be too caught up in your own change!
