1 in 10 U.S. high schools is a ‘dropout factory’
Story here
quote: WASHINGTON - It’s a nickname no principal could be proud of: “Dropout factory,” a high school where no more than 60 percent of the students who start as freshmen make it to their senior year. That description fits more than one in 10 high schools across America.
Rest of the article is pretty disturbing. Oh and Utah is the only state with one.

That's too bad.
I really would like to know what goes through the minds of dropouts. Why?? It's just so stupid.

It's ironic, it's probably the "No Child Left Behind" deal that's making more people drop out.
Eh, I really don't know.

It also says
quote: Utah, which has low poverty rates and fewer minorities than most states, is the only state without a "dropout factory."
Would the key words be poverty and minority?

The obvious question....Are most drop-outs come from minorities? If so, what can be done to fix it.

It is in the article:
quote: The highest concentration of dropout factories is in large cities or high-poverty rural areas in the South and Southwest. Most have high proportions of minority students. These schools are tougher to turn around because their students face challenges well beyond the academic ones — the need to work as well as go to school, for example, or a need for social services.
The minority part is a moot point, but yes it is true. The question is how to fix it period.
Here's a map of state percentages:

Only 1 in 10? With the arrogance and severely depleted intellect exhibited by today's youth, I figured only 1 in 10 student bodies would actually be worth a damn.

I think your use of "today's" is inaccurate. If I am not mistaken, we are have higher education rates than in any other time in history. The last 100 years in the US has seen some major education leaps. We are not failing as bad as people would think. Though we shouldn't settle for what we have now, we also shouldn't look down on the system as being a failure.

I don't care if the schools are failing. I just want the kids to be put into Death Camps!
Did I say Death Camps? I meant Happy Camps.

Nope, all four are alive and kicking. Steven (the youngest, of Bio-Dome fame) has found Jesus; he's now travelling the U.S. in a school bus preaching "the word".

I swear, I really can't wait to just graduate from school and never have to see another arrogant teen who wants to dropout for a lame excuse again.

School systems are not set up to keep kids interested, and thus, many kids are basically "pushed" out. Not to mention that, for the sake of the class and the content + beurecratic authority, much individual and assertive learning is not only frowned upon, but reprimanded.
Everyone I know who didn't finish high school, yes, they made the choice, but school never provided the right type of learning environment for them.

If only the rest of us could have genius minorities. Like when the lawn jockey actually keeps people off the lawn.
