To be fair, America won pretty much every major conventional engagement and had all but destroyed the Viet Cong by the end of the war (which was admittedly a boon to North Vietnam, who could absorb them into the NVA and not have to worry about a power struggle with Southern communists after the war), it was the capitulation of the South Vietnamese Army and the refusal of Congress to extend the war plus widespread public fatigue and anti-war sentiment that contributed to the diplomatic defeat.
I'd argue that the War of 1812 is a much better example of America losing a war.
