Trump to scrap Nasa climate research in crackdown on 'politicised science'

https://www.theguardian.com/environ...change-research
quote:
Donald Trump is poised to eliminate all climate change research conducted by Nasa as part of a crackdown on "politicised science", his senior adviser on issues relating to the space agency has said.

Nasa's Earth science division is set to be stripped of funding in favor of exploration of deep space, with the president-elect having set a goal during the campaign to explore the entire solar system by the end of the century.

This would mean the elimination of Nasa's world-renowned research into temperature, ice, clouds and other climate phenomena. Nasa's network of satellites provide a wealth of information on climate change, with the Earth science division's budget set to grow to $2bn next year.

Certain kinds of stupidity aren't particularly funny, yours for example.

Do you consider the stupidity of Hillary supporters to be funny?

To be fair there is a lot of evidence of the left sensationalizing climate research. I think it's laugh that you are trying to suggest he is censoring climate research.

Yes, and you wrote the Op to not mention why he is not funding it? We get it, you don't like him.

If the left has really been sensationalizing evidence of this..that is messed up.

Am I in favor of Trump not doing this research and looking into space stuff? Not really. Let's take care of the shit on this planet before we go and ruin someone elses.

NASA can be shockingly inept at times. The Penn and Teller Bullshit episode about them kinda..makes them look bad.

No matter which candidate you voted for, we all live on the same planet (Although after doing some research, a sizeable portion of your population belongs in Narnia). If he wants to be more critical of climate change research, that's fine, but trying to crack down and remove funding for the field from NASA should worry even the dumbest of Americans. Thankfully as time passes, the United States continues to fall further behind the rest of us and after the idiocy of the 2016 Election, I hope the modern world relies less on the United States to lead on such issues.

I agree with ROO boy/gal/it. I like the idea of the rest of the world depending on the U.S less and less. Let them put their hands out for money from someone else for a change.

Jesus f*ck, he's going back on everything he rambled about. And I'm not against that. But cutting climate change research in exchange for more space exploration research? Goddammit...

To use your own brand of straw man that you love so much: their episode on second-hand smoking was completely wrong though. Now marvel at how I deflected from your point to counter a tangentially-related point and hold myself smugly over you with a condescending quip----where's that little smile you had before?

Where has the love of this false dichotomy come from? We have the capacity and wealth to solve our own problems here while also expanding in to the system. The research and technologies involved in both will be complimentary to one another.

This only affect's nasa, right?

Asking, because I don't know how the "division of labor" works in climate research, and want to know if the "non Nasa' sources can pick up the slack (Or perhaps, if non Nasa source's have a bigger impact overall.)

How important are they compared to all the private/university research?

Are there alternative's to Nasa's satelite's? Or would do other parties just use Nasa's web, and pay them for it or something?

Well I'm no expert but my understanding is the NASA is a leading researcher in the field, and has made various breakthroughs regarding it, it's also only logical that there equipment and resources would be much greater than that of any private research group or university, not just anyone has access to space tech, or the expertise to handle it.

Also some expert comments from the article:
quote:
Kevin Trenberth, senior scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, said as Nasa provides the scientific community with new instruments and techniques, the elimination of Earth sciences would be "a major setback if not devastating".

"It could put us back into the 'dark ages' of almost the pre-satellite era," he said. "It would be extremely short sighted."
quote:
Michael Mann, a climate scientist at Penn State University, said Nasa has a "critical and unique role" in observing Earth and climate change.

"Without the support of Nasa, not only the US but the entire world would be taking a hard hit when it comes to understanding the behavior of our climate and the threats posed by human-caused climate change," he said.
I'm also not convinced Trump's team have a clue regarding how other researchers could pick up the slack. They seem pretty clueless on the subject in general.
