From what I know, in America it's the Republican rightists who started the war on drugs (the leftists are usually the ones trying to decriminalise, etc.), are the hard Christians who disagree with premarital sex, and are the ones trying to boycott Star Wars of all things due to the fact that the film portrays the bad guys as... well, bad.
