little question: how do you get pictures in your thread without people having to download them?

Use the IMG button above, put the URL to the picture in there and away you go.
Of course, this means you need to have the picture on a server somewhere.

It needs to be on an Internet Server somewhere.
Check with your ISP, do you get webspace with them? If so then you just need an FTP program and some simple instructions and you're away.
I use WS_FTP, it's easy to use.
If you have IE 5.x then there is FTP support bult in as well, also very easy.

Well, we've targeted most of our server to game fansites, but we might be open to other possibilities as well. If you arel ooking for a host, we might be able to help. Of course, any policy change requires the "thumbs up" from the owner of the server space.

We wanted a place for free fansite hosting, so we started http://www.project404.org
If you have a not for profit game related fansite, and you need a free host that won't overload your page with ads, then we could probably help you. We ask for a couple links to be displayed, of course.
we can offer subdomains for either of these urls.

Along with the subdomain, we can offer a few forums to go with the site too. If you have your own domain name, that can also be hosted.
We're a bit tight on what we permit. No warez, porn, or cheat programs, etc. Other than that, we hope to create a number of linked communities for the various games that are out there, and watch them grow.
The bandwidth is offered to us at low cost. If you have a for profit site, I can send you our hosting partner's contact info.

the Administrators for our site usually make joint decisions on whether to host a site. We have an understanding with our current hosted sites that we'll host only one fansite per game.
If we have the hosted site forums tied together (like this site) then hopefully people will travel across the host network to the other hosted sites. As long as each fansite is promoted by the webmaster, the potential number of viewers for the other sites grows too.
Also, with our connection to The Helper's site, technical support for those games is available.
Over at The-Group, we have anywhere from 2500 to 5000 views per day driven by only 2 hosted sites and technical support. We think that a community of fansites and technical support can do even better than that.
