I put the avatar (picture) in my paint program and then I select "resize" and type in 64 by 64 and then It should be right.

These small images are called Avatars . They are displayed below your username on all posts that you make, and are generally selected to describe your personality or likes. There are two kinds of avatars: those provided by us and those that you upload yourself.
You can create your own little picture by using our Avatar Creator . Just upload a picture from your computer and the tool will send you a compatible picture back that you can use.
To select your avatar now please click here .
UPDATE
The following is the current avatar dimension limits:
64x64 - For users registered under a year.
85x85 - For users registered for more than a year.
100x100 - For moderators and for users who have registered for more than two years.
Please note: all avatars are still subject to the 10k size limit.

And if you mean pictures in the threads that you're trying to upload...images are scaled down if they have huge dimensions.

If you literally mean images, then the uploader won't allow anything that exceeds the set forum dimensions. You'll need to open the image in a program such as Paint, if that's all you have, and resize it
Alternatively you can also upload the image to somewhere like photobucket.com or imageshack.us and then copy/paste the url link provided from there to one of your posts here. But make sure the image is a suitable size or it'll warp the page when you post it and that's not appreciated.

Yeah, so use the thumbnails, it's better for everyone.
