You might be trying to change it to a username that someone previously had. Those names come up as taken as well, even though they aren't currently.

If you send a pm to an old username, will they still receive it or does it have to be addressed to their current name?

That's retarded, old usernames should be deleted. Why keep them around? Which Mod does the actual name changing?
