"A Love Song for Bobby Long" is a little flick about a recently deceased woman named Lorraine, and how she was a literal urban legend. She touched everyone she met in someway. When her daughter, Pursy, played by Scarlett Johansson, catches wind of her passing, she takes off from her trailer park in Florida and heads to the Quarter in New Orleans for her funeral. There she encounters Bobby Long (Travolta) a once great college lit professor who is just a shell of himself, having turned to the bottle. On his side, his former assisant, Lawson Pines.

Upon discovering that she was 1/3rd owner of Lorraine's old house, the story of her mother slowly unravels before her through tales from Bobby and the locals, all of which have their own memories which include Pursy herself. Pursy, an independent, headstrong gal, who at the same time is vulnerable and urning for answers, starts anew in the Big Easy, and learns more about herself and her own life from people she hardly remembers.

The movie itself was very touching, and for a 2 hour drama, kept me intrigued all the way through. The uneasiness of Pursy's character, fighting to understand everything that's thrown at her was pulled off amazingly by Johansson, who's only 20 years old, but already a vet.
John Travolta's cajun is a little rusty, but didn't detract from a very heartstring pulling, dramatic performance. It's a coming of age story, but featuring someone who grew up on her own long ago, just filling in the spaces left behind.

Very pretty story, a great date flick, and a solid effort all around.
