"about Schmidt"

On my birthday, I walked out of "Die Another Day", extremely disapointed: James Bond wins and gets laid. Oh christ, what an original idea. But I spotted a movie poster that got my attention; It was Jack Nicholson, old looking with shaggy, receeding hair, with "About Schmidt" as the title.

Given Nicholson's past work, I was excited just to see he did another film. As far as I know, he's only done one movie since "As Good As it Gets", which is one of the last movies of mine to get four stars (the only other four star movies since 1997 have been "The Blair Witch Project", "Titanic", "American Beauty", "Election" and "Life is Beautiful").

I went into "About Schmidt" pretty much cold turkey. I only saw the poster. I never saw the trailer. So I didn't know what it was about. But I was pretty much anticipating the best, and I think I got it.

Nicholson plays Warren Schmidt, a recent retiree, who doesn't know what he wants to do with his new free time. He reolizes that he has grown distant from his wife, and daughter, but doesn't quite know how to come terms with it. In fact, has his life achievements made any impact on anyone?

I'm not going to tell you anything more about this film. You'll have to see it for yourself. But what I will say, is that I think this is Nicholson's most mature and best work (and this is a guy who has made some of the best movies ever made!!!!!). He completely steps outside of his loud, raunchy attitude of most movies, and becomes a lonely, quiet man.

This is the BEST movie I've seen this year (granted I havn't yet seen "Chicago" or "The Hours"). The fact that "About Schmidt" was not nominated for Best Picture, is the worst betrayal since Russell Crowe in "Gladiator" won for Best Actor instead of Tom Hanks in "Cast Away".

ABOUT SCHMIDT:

(*** out of four)- however, this is a strong canidate for a four star movie. I just need to see it again.

Everyone go see this, please. This is possibly the most touching and emotional story in years.

This is not Jack Nicholson in this role. That's what makes it so great. He doesn't raise his eyebrow, finti. And he is not past his prime, Backfire.

I do not want to give away any details of this movie, other than the vauge plot description I gave (which is more than I had).

All I ask from you all is an open mind enough to see it. You will not be sorry, I assure you.

well, its a weird situation with jack... he is past his prime, because in his prime he was simply so good that no one will be able to achieve that kinda success again. he's still one of th ebest actors out there though.
