come on guys we need to talk more on this kick ass book, FIRST AGE!!! Melkor!! bloody TULKAS
who has actually read it, I have read it a few times and may read it come this time next year - who knows *shrugs*
favourite chapter has to be "of Thengol and Melian"
Melian has to be my favourite female character of that age, great mair and received vast amounts of respect.
Turin has to be the greatest story of that age to be honest, his tragic story is probably the best I have ever read.

The Silmarillion depressed me the way memories sometimes do when they conjure up people and places lost in time. But even so, this so-called depression was bittersweet, and not unsatisfying.
I would attribute it not the occurences in the plot, although there are a few real "downers" naturally, but to the tone of the work: elegaic, mournful. The Silmarillion is a history and a myth that you become emotionally involved with in spite of the distance placed between you and the characters. It's uncanny, really.
It's both depressing and hopeful, that's for sure, but in such a powerful way that it left me shaking after the first time I read it.
Meh...Túrin isn't exactly my most favorite character but I don't hate the guy. He's still a great character and served the story well, though yeah...some of his judgments were definitely questionable.
Gender: Male Location: The Faroe Islands - Thorshavn
I agree with Discus on Turin's part, that story is THE best story in the book, Beren And Lúthien is also VERY VERY good, I'm gonna reread all the main tolkien books this sommer.

lay off Turin, his sword was pretty sweet and his friend (which he ended up killing) was a bit.....oops!
Wish there was more of the silmarillion but thats what HoME are for. I still aint got round to reading them babies.
shadowy is such a ***** when it comes to this topic
the only really depressing part of the silmarillion was reading about elves (who are immortal) being slaves for eternity.....ouch.
