Physical Attacks - The higher the attacking Pokemon's Attack skill is, the more damage its move will do. But the higher the defending Pokemon's Defensive skill is, the less damage it will suffer.
Example: Pikachu uses Quick Attack on Golem.
Special Attacks - The higher the attacking Pokemon's Speical Attack skill is, the more damage its move will do. But the higher the defending Pokemon's Special Defense skill is, the less damage it will suffer, but it still receives good amount of damage.

Shoot It!
When shooting a Pokemon, types factor into the hitting of the projectile. Some types can destroy or stop bullets, or ignore them! It depends on their special attacks though. "Running" means they can't do anything against bullets except for dodge it.
Normal - Running!
Fire - Ranged Fire attacks like Flamethrower can melt bullets!
Water - Running!
Electric - Running, since Electric attacks will only make the bullets more deadly. Think about it...
Grass - Running!
Ice - Freeze bullets in midair with ranged Ice attacks, or blow them off track with Blizzard.
Fighting - Running!
Poison - Running!
Ground - Can use Dig to retreat into the ground and avoid all gunfire.
Flying - Gust and Whirlwind will make bullets go wide.
Psychic - Watch out for these. Firing a gun at a Psychic Pokemon that knows Psychic could get ugly VERY fast. Can do as they please with bullets using Psychic abilities.
Bug - Running! Harden will reduce damage, but not enough.
Rock - Defensive moves will reduce damage drastically.
Ghost - Ha! You can't hit them!
Dragon - Depends on types combined with Dragon.
Dark - Running!
Steel - Shooting this Pokemon is like trying to take down a tank with slingshot.
Melee Combat
This is very ill advised, but it can be done, depending on the Pokemon.
Fighting Pokemon will definitely out do you in hand-to-hand combat.
Psychic Pokemon can stop you in your tracks before you even lift a fist.
Ghost Pokemon cannot be hit by physical attacks, except by Fighting-type Pokemon.
Steel Pokemon will break your knuckles if you try to punch their hard exteriors...
Well, I've just recently started playing the newest versions. Most of the stuff you see above is the basics that I know, with the help of my brother's guide book.
Some help would be appreciated, if you don't mind.
