who is smith?

you might have gone over this before but i have been spending my time in the other threads, but who is Smith? is he a former agent who in the first film picked up some of neos "code" as suggest by the second film, or is he Neo's alter-ego created by the system to balance out neo as suggested by the oracle in the third film, perhaps even a creation from the architect? or a combo of all of these?

smith is the balance...you can;'t have a superhero with a supervillian...

Smith along with the other 2 agents...were programmed to be anti-virus programs of sorts. Smith was never unplugged becasue he wasn't a human to begin with but he was set free when Neo entered his body in M1 and then blew him up. It like, severed his coded links as an anti virus program. So yes Smith was created by the one who created the matrix but he is only the balance now.
