A while ago, I asked my college firend to watch the matrix movies an tell me what he got out of it. He wrote a few things down and i thought It would be good for you guys to see; here it is:
·The matrix itself is very similar to the Maya (illusion of life) spoken of in Hinduism.
·It also has similarities to the ideas of the allegory of the cave and represents in itself a stat of illusion and blindness.
·In the first film the “system” is seen as the ultimate enemy. In the second film, the realization comes that it is not the system that is evil but rather evil itself. Neo meets both good and bad programs and begins to fight for the greater good.
·The Matrix essentially is and ignorant bliss, like that which Adam dwelled in the book of genesis.
·The knowledge gained by escaping the Matrix is similar to the choice Eve makes to see the world in its full potential and gain true knowledge of the “real world”.
·Ironically it is Eve, like Trinity, who guides her mate to the same point.
·Neo is reminiscent to many figures in religion and myth.
·While most see his similarity to Jesus of Nazareth, he has striking resemblances to the Buddha.
·The Prophecy of “the one” speaks of the return of an ancient messiah. The Architect tells Neo that he is an anomaly that keeps returning. This holds a major similarity to the ideas of reincarnation in Hinduism and the belief in a reincarnating Buddha.
·Like Jesus of Nazareth, Neo sacrifices his life for the souls of others, even his enemies (machines).
·Neo reaches the point of “enlightenment” in the first film where he sees the inter-workings of the Matrix through the program. In the second third film he sees the inter-workings of the real world, meaning that his power does not only come in the matrix, but are of something greater which even the machines cannot comprehend.
·Because of Neo’s sacrifice he creates a state of nothingness or peace spoken of in Buddhism to the three worlds (The Matrix, Zion, and the Machine city).

·Agent smith is the classic villain of myth.
·He is the exact opposite of Neo and is guided by dharma (purpose) instead of choice.
·The idea that Smith and Neo are of the same comes from Hinduism, in which all souls are connected to the universal soul, Brahma. In this sense, Smith and Neo are like two gods who are only against one another to fulfill their dharma.
·Smith is not defeated physically by neo, but rather becomes one with him and is guided by Neo’s choice of death.
·They both become one with the system, or universal soul.
