Kingdom Come is a story line set in he future after Superman had given up the hero gig and removed himself from society..... things get screwed up by the newbies and he returns... then the government decide they'd be safer without super people at all and try to kill them.... go read it... i only read it recently but it's pretty damn good
Hunter Prey is another Superman story in which he realises Doomsday might still be alive and goes to track him down... this is where you learn Doomsday's origins and he beats the crap outta Darkseid

The thing you are on about that rivals Marvels house of M is called infinite Crisis. It is supposed to be huge and make House of M look rubbish and tiny apparently. For more info on it, I have already starteda thread called infinite Crisis. Here it is
