how many people at hogwarts?
ok so lets say there are about 10 ppl per year ( so 5 guys 5 girls) about, so that when two houses are in a class together there are about 20 people in the class, so we times 10 by 7 and we get 70, then you take 70 and times that by 4, which comes out to 280

you know...we've been thinking the same thing.  'cause if there are just 10 students per level in each house, that makes it 70 students per house all in all...
70 students per house seems pretty proportioned but the books make it seem as if there are a lot more...

yeah..seems like ther eare a lot more!!!! there are 10 in harry's year, so she was probably assuming that there were that many in every year

JKR said there are one thousand students, but she doesn't mention the great majority of them - there are several Griffindor girls in Harry's year who have never been mentioned. She is delberately vague about numbering.
