Love Things we do for our Harry/Draco fix.

Any Harry Potter sites that I go to, there seem to be a considerable amount of supporters of the Harry/Draco ship. Why?
There are certain things that appeals to heterosexual female readers and audience; they usually prefer a rich, handsome, somewhat arrogant man to be paired off with the main character of the book/movie. Now, whether that main character is a boy or a girl doesn’t matter because they have already associated with him/her too much; and lets face it, it fiction with capital F. Straight girls will obviously be attracted to another guy rather than a girl; this philosophy doesn’t change when they’re watching a movie or reading a book.
That’s not to say that the heterosexual male audiences are any different. They have their own femslash and lesbian porn. I know a few guys who admit to watching Desperate Housewives. In it, they visualize Susan Mayer’s being paired off with Eddie Britt-the nasty, arrogant, successful hottie who is usually seen belittling Susan. Hmm, Draco Malfoy, anyone? These men visualize Susan and Eddie doing the exact same things that slash fiction authors and artists usually has Harry and Draco doing.
Lets examine the similarities between Draco Malfoy and Eddie Britt: they’re both very successful financially, they’re both arrogant, they’re both mean to the main characters, they’re both absolutely gorgeous and they are both feared by other characters. Is it because we’re all humans and maybe deep down we all want the same thing?
Girls love slash fiction just like guys love femslash and scantily clad women fighting in the mud. We’re all humans, fundamentally, we’re not that different. However, in the popular media, even though guys are seen talking about their fascination with lesbians, girls are never seen talking about their love of slash fiction. It’s a pity really.
It’s a subject so taboo, that no attempts had even been made to integrate into everyday topics. Yet, there is nothing remotely taboo about it and fans of this exist by the hundreds of millions of them. Does anybody wonder how long it would take for people to acknowledge it in normal conversations? And what other countries aside from Japan that actually makes the effort to satisfy their female population by taking the initiative to publish and animate yaoi?
Japan has made considerable progress in dealing with the growing demand of the much needed guy on guy action for the ladies. Animes such as “Ranma ½”, “God Save Our King”, and the subtle gay theme of Keroro and Tamama of “Sgt. Keroro”, etc. seems to have been a huge hit in the West for the straight girls and gay boys.
Slash fiction has been around for ages. Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk provided some much needed titillation to our grand mothers and mothers, “Slam Dunk”s Kaeda and Hanamichi upheld it along with thousands of other books and TV programs such as “Buffy”s Spike and Angel, etc.
People’s devotion to slash is also very intense. They have endured horrified shocks from male family members who had “discovered” them at it one day, and who just don’t get it. Has anyone in here had any of those experiences? If so, when and how? Did it turn you off on slash or do you still love it? Discuss.
