Immorality in the Potterverse

Ever notice how much magical mind-rape and brainwashing goes on in the series and the potential different means of magical mind control have to enable the spell casters to take advantage of people?

1) The Imperius Curse is quite rightly an Unforgivable Curse as it takes away people's free will. A grave psychic violation.

BUT

2) Love potions so called (they would be better termed 'date-rape drug' or 'draught of obsession') can enable someone who slips one to their victims to take advantage of them the same way they could by using the Imperius Curse to that end. Dumbledore himself makes the comparison between the Imperius Curse and love potions, saying that Merope using a love potion on Tom Riddle had the same effect as using the Imperius Curse would have done. And yet they are sold in joke shops run by designated good characters?! Given that we are supposed to be outraged by the use of the Imperius Curse this is just bizarre.

3) Memory charms are used on muggles routinely for brainwashing and non-consentual lobotomies whenever muggles are exposed to knowledge of the magical world due to the inconpetence or malice of wizards and witches. Remember that memory charms can cause brain damage (remember Lockhart). The treatment we see of memory charms is completely bizarre given that we are supposed to be outraged by the use of the Imperius Curse.

So what do you think? Is JKR telling us that the magical society is really warped or is she morally challenged herself?

I think she's just telling us that the wizarding world, just like the muggle world, still has its problems, even though all of them can use magic - because the general attitude of muggles toward magic is "yes it can solve all our problems!!"

But putting these things in shows the wizarding world isn't perfect, that not everybody's noble, and a person's sins may be as small as taking a bit of Felix Felicious right before you plan to ask the person you like on a date.
