In this day and age, one could ask how much can the entertainment business milk us for? Now we have Blu-Ray taking a shot at becoming our norm. Backed up by Sony, Blu-Ray is slowly making it harder on us to decide by ourselves whether or not we want to accept Blu-ray as an option. As most PS3 owners now have realized.
On the other side we have Microsoft HD DVD. A somewhat recognized entertainment company slowly competing for our dough. With these two choices, it's hard to know for sure which will reign supreme.
If you ask me, I believe porn willset the standard of which format will be universally accepted. It did wonders for VHS, and I predict it'll do the same for either Blu-Ray HD DVD. Which brings me to my next question, do we really want crystal clear visuals in our porn? Do we wish to see every pore on these sad pornstars? Let's discuss this.

Porn will not offset anything. Factors will be pricing, availability, popularity, and titles supporting them.
Though these new DVDs have clearer pictures, standard DVDs are not bad. Would you really pay $10-15 more for a little bit clearer picture in a porn? I'd rather just buy two standard DVDs for the price of one Blu-Ray or HD-DVD.
And who's to say that the entire porn industry is going to back one format? It's a big industry and it's hard to believe that they'll all collectively agree on one format to back. Some will go to one, some will go to the other (i.e. Playboy will back HD-DVD. Penthouse will back Blu-Ray).
I'm sure all XXX marketing companies will agree one one once they discover the benefits each format has to over. I'm just saying, if it happened once already with VHS and Beta, it can happen again.
