Underestimating Superman's Popularity/Notoriety....

It's a very common thing I see on this forum and other teenage-affluenced forums. Everyone assumes three things:

1) Superman is not popular at all and everyone hates him. Which is why he's never on television and we collected every piece of evidence he exists and launched them into the Sun. Bush called it Operation: Destroy the "S" Shield.

2) Spider-Man/Wolverine/Blade is more popular, well-known or beloved by the world. People in Malaysia have no idea who Superman is but they certainly know who Jubilee and Nightcrawler are!

3) Superman will soon be forgotten. Like Jesus and King Arthur were.

I personally think it has do with the age audience, demographics and similar interests people have on this forum that persuades them to think this way even though the real world clearly doesn't.

Anyone have comments on this issue?

Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man are the three most popular and well known superheroes at the moment. Superman's been around the longest and has spawned more catch phrases and such that people remember. If you say "Batman and Robin" people know what you're talking about, and if you say "its a bird, its a plane" people finish the line. Superman Returns is going to make a shitload of money at the box office, just as Spider-Man and Batman did.

I'm not referring to just the movie, I'm referring to the character in itself as well. Thanks for the contribution, of course!

I agree with everything in your post except the last sentence because like Batman Begins, it has been poorly promoted and that was a huge factor in why Begins just barely did over 200 million at the box office. Now onto supermans popularity,It just seems that its mostly the older generation that takes to the superman comics these days.where the younger generation doesnt have much of an interest in the superman comics.

btw, drache, did you see my last post to you fist of norths thread? big grin Never mind, dont answer that,I see you did. big grin

The younger generation certainly isn't as enthused by Superman comics as the older generation. But they certainly know who is, what is name is and a plethora of facts on what he can do and his history. I don't even REMEMBER when I first heard about Superman. Superman was drilled into my skull before I even got concrete memory...

I remember seeing Spider-Man and the X-Men for the first time by the cartoons.

That's because his comics sucked in the ninties and eighties. But I certainly enjoyed his animated series. THAT was good.

well it wasnt that,I mean I just never could get into superman because the whole idea thing of him disguising himslef just by putting on glasses and that alone fooled people,I found all a little bit corny and not at all realistic.but yeah I liked the cartoon show.

Well see the good thing is that the younger generation has Smallville to capture their interest in Superman. The older ones know of the whole mythos but the younger ones obviously wouldn't (and anybody in their right mind wouldn't get sucked in nowadays to the POW and ZAP nature of PC-Supes lol), so although the younger generation is not as well versed in Superman, they still have outlets like the JLU animated series and so forth.

I have to agree with you Mr. Parker on the poor advertisement for Batman Begins. If they had hyped it up more, it would've definitely made around the Batman '89 figures, but eh oh well what can you do - save it for the sequel.

yeah I hope they at least have learned from that mistake and wont repeat it the next time. mad They already had one negative going against it in the first place in the fact that there had already been four batman movies made prior to it so the urge to go there and see batman on the big screen wasnt there like it was back in 89 because they could already pop a batman movie into the VCR and watch one if they so desired.I mean they already had that huge negative going against them,so if your not going to go all out and promote it like crazy to try and make up for the negative you already have, then your just adding on one more negative to that. roll eyes (sarcastic) I sure hope the marketing and promotional people for that movie were fired. mad

Agreed 100%.

Superman probably has more haters than any other superhero, but only because he's much more famous than just about every one else. He also has MUCH more fans than any other hero.

People aren't going to forget Superman, at least not for a very loooong time. I even remember hearing about a list of "The Most Famous Men Who Never Existed," and Superman made the top spot (others included James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, and Tarzan).

Superman has a plaque in the UN, that should be enough of an example of how popular and influential the character is.

Superman, Batman and Spiderman are all popular. But...

Superman is an ICON. Starving children in africa know who superman is. Drug dealers in columbia know who superman is. Inuit ice people in the actic know who he is. Superman has 3 definitions is the oxford english dictionary. He's gone far beyond a comic book character. People bash him today becaue the man doesn't take the "punisher approach" to bad guys. But that is what has made him great, and will continue to make him great. He'll be around long after you and I are gone.
