Cool The Justice system

OK, so we know in the DC universe the justice system is woefully inadequate - this is necessary for if every villain got their comeuppance there would be far fewer surviving.

However, on this thread let's list the ways in which different villains should be penalised and agree or disagree.

I'll start.

Would you say that the Joker should be fastened to a rack and lowered very slowly into a vat of caustic alkali, say a foot every hour - or that he should be fastened to a rack and suspended above a pack of mad and ravenous dogs just out of reach and lowered a little bit every hour?

Why, no. Because I don't approve of torture.

some people well desrve it Gregory...it is the only way to set their minds straight.Generally torture is themost abhorable form of punishment but some thing count more than just the person being tortured. Joker for instance deserves to be tortured as he has done possibly unimaginable thing with people.I say it's about time

This is nothing to do with "setting someone's mind straight"; it's about vengeance, pure and simple. If you can find any example's of a lunatic being tortured into sanity, I'll consider it. Even granting that torture could ever be appropriate (something I do only for the sake of discussion), I am not sure it would be appropriate in the Joker's case; he's so utterly psychotic that it doesn't really make sense to pass moral judgement. He's stated, for example, that he believes that only two people exist in the universe: himself and the Batman. Every one else are figments of their immagination, created to pass the time. Is killing a figment of one's immagination evil? Probably not.

But shaber asked us to disagree, so I will do so, and will further offer my own (admittedly rather less lurid) solution): the villians should be locked up in a place they will actually be unable to escape from (if such a thing exists in the world of comic books) and kept their until their deaths.

Well Joker is a murderer and has destroyed many lives, regardless of whether or not he is insane. It isn't justified either way. HJe doesn't even have a good cause to do so...he doesn't have any cause infact. So we don't need one to punish him, even though we have amny strong reasons

Ah! It's strange to see so many people who claim to be fans of the batman posting about revenge killing of criminals - a line which bats himself refuses to cross.

Quite right! I edited out the "attack" - It's wrong of me to name call on a chat board....

Tho perfectly acceptable to advocate the torture and shooting of criminals.

Apparently.

OK, so we all know how institutions for those with any type of mental problem are keen on force feeding the patients drugs whether or not they need it. This treatment is applied equally both to those who deserve rough treatment and those who are themselves victims of trauma or disease when it is obviously unethical.

Is it ethical to forcefeed supervillains dangerous drugs until their brains are fried? The only villain I can think of who specialises in drug dealing himself is the Scarecrow. Would it be alright to apply dangerous substances to him or would that be too severe? erm

Hermy was saying that only quite severe torture could affect the Joker in any way; he always seems to be totally detached from matters of physical and mental trauma.

That's what I thought. Doesn't Batman consider Lock-Up an enemy exactly because he engages in exactly this sort of brutality?

here's a good one. lets put the joker in a giant high chair, bib and everthing. Place in the the middle of the cell block at arkham so that all the other inmates can watch from all angles then feed him a stew made of the corpses of everyone he's ever killed. When he's done, dismember tiny parts of his body everyday, and place them on a table to be puzzled back together. For example, cut off one joint of his index finger today, and another tomorrow etc.,Very much like an archeologist with dinosaur bones. I defy N-E-1 to come up with something more ill. but on the other the Joker being a sick bastard might start to enjoy it after a while

Yeah that's good, but the corpses should be of executed criminals. Also he would probably need a drug of some kind to heighten awareness during this process and suffer controlled electrocution to keep him on his toes.

yeah...personally i think recenge is justified...whatever the bat thinks!Revenge is a way of practising equality in things.A person hits you, you have the right to hit him back.it is WRONG however, if u kill him only because he hit u. But killing is also a form of revenge and nonetheless justified.Take MOTP, i wholeheartedly beleive that Andrea's revenge on the mob was justified. It would have been wrong however if she had let them get away with what they did to her.
It is more of a crime to let yourself be a victim of the crime...

Yes, in that film it seemed that the Joker being out of touch with reality was mainly sham, assumed to avoid the death penalty. Didn't he seem very 'with it' to you?

No, Joker wouldn´t have to be killed in my opinion. He would had to have his own cell. It would have build with one meter of titanium. It would have only a small hole for feeding him. He would have 150 guards. All with hi-tech weapons. If someone would even try to release him, his cell would have auto-targeting laser weapon system who would be started with 10-digits code that only the main guard would know. If he would be captured by criminals, Joker would be shot instantly by some lesser guard. The main guard would be a man who would be ready to die for his work.

Ok, I was a bit overreacting big grin , but I would like to see Joker trying to escape from that.
