Chapter 1

As Julia rushed to the Darent valley hospital, would there be a parking space when she got there was playing on her mind.
The slow coach in front was doing more than play on her mind as she tried to persuade the driver to speed up by sitting on his tail. She shouted, ”Come on, come on get a move on.”

It was the typical morning rush for Julia her whole life seemed to be one continuous rush. Setting the alarm clock for 7a.m doesn’t mean you have to get out of bed at that un-earthly hour in Julia’s book. Having only been working at the hospital for the past couple of weeks, she was keen to not let her boss down.
The slow coach in front kept stopping to pick up more passengers and at the next stop Julia slipped down to third gear, glided around the coach and raced down the road towards the hospital.

At last she was there and the search for a parking space did not delay her that much. The hospital had a `brave new world` look about it, all new, modern and clean.
Julia locked her sporty Tigra and ran through the pouring rain to the hospital entrance lobby.
Once inside she could feel the odd atmosphere that she had experienced since her first day, a feeling that wasn’t uncomfortable just strange. She looked up at the CCTV’s as she walked to the Administration section where she worked.
The cameras seemed to follow her but other people had said they felt the same so it did not worry her any more.

A couple of minutes later she was at the Administration section and was breezing into the office where she worked.
She said “Hi there” to her boss Mr Widmark; he grunted a feeble “Morning Julia” and carried on scanning the screen of his work terminal. Julia sat down and logged on.

It was 8.55a.m and she had made it in before the others for the third day running, only two more days to go and the week was in the bag.

The others, arrived together just before 9, Michael and Kath, they were arriving at the same time, most days lately but they both used their own cars.
Could they be an item, Julia thought they were but they looked odd together. Perhaps there was more to it and Julia felt the need to find out.

Her screen was on the Menu page, from here she could drill down to almost every file the hospital had if she wanted. The personal records were available for every person who worked at the hospital; anything you needed to know about anybody was easily accessible.

“If I could have your attention for a moment “ Mr Widmark blurted out.
They swung their chairs round to look at him all at the same time.

“ I have to attend a very important meeting on Monday to discuss the Staffing levels at the hospital. I have to convince them upstairs, who think they can save money by trimming people numbers down that it will lead to poor patient care”.
Julia, thought the job that she had was a secure one up until now and knew the only way to make it secure was to do a good job.

“How can we help you Richard?” she asked.

“I need all three of you to work on a specific section of our records to give me an up to date detailed report of;

Who works at this hospital?
How many years have they worked for N.H.S?
How much they earn?
What was their last performance level review set at?”

“ Julia, can you start going through all the Doctor and Senior Nurses files,
Michael I need you to do the same with the Nurses files, I’m sure you’ll enjoy that and Kath can you get to work on all the service staff you know porters, auxiliaries, cooks etc, etc.”

They swung back to their screens, this was a tough job and they only had the rest of the week to get it done. Mind you going through all of the `doctor` files would be very interesting as there were some good-looking ones who could check me over any day Julia thought.

The rest of the day was spent analysing personal files in the hospitals huge data bank. One by one Julia opened each doctor file in turn. Doctor’s files were arranged by their specialist area, which made it difficult to locate each doctor easily. Fractures, Orthopaedics, Heart, Neurosurgeons, Digestive etc, etc, the list was complex and would take longer than Julia had first thought.

“ Anyone fancy a biscuit,” said Mike.
“ You can’t have a bikky without a cup of tea” replied Julia.
“ O.K, I guess it’s my turn to be tea lady,” mumbled Kath.

With no time for lunch it would be a relief to get this job out of
the way. Julia had as a back up an alphabetical list of all the doctors that practised at the hospital. As she was assembling the lists in their specialist area in descending level of pay and adding their length of service, she noticed something that seemed irregular at first glance. It was too early to come to any conclusion but there was a strong desire

to get the `doctor` list finished. Only then could Julia’s concerns be worth further investigation.

“ How’s it going”? asked Mr Widmark upon entering the office.
No one replied at first, as they were all deeply immersed in their respective tasks. You could have heard a paper cup drop and not have noticed the spill on the twisty leafy looking carpet, as the tension was almost visible in the air itself.

“ Sorry Richard what did you just say?” asked Kath
“ I said how’s it going?”
All of them stopped and looked up, their expressions said it all, Don’t ask such a stupid question Richard.
“ Oh well, carry on and keep me posted, all of you”

With that he made a quick exit, rambling on about some appointment he had to keep.

It was nearing the end of a very long and exhausting day and the thought of another couple of days of the same pressure made Julia start to have second thoughts about her new job.
All she wanted to do now was go home and crash out on the sofa in front of the T.V. A glance out of the window and she could see it was getting dark already, where did the day go she thought. It was raining; surely it couldn’t have been raining all day.

The time was nearly 4.30 or as Mr Widmark would say 16.30 hrs. Whatever way it was said it meant time for home. Julia shut down her screen, tidied the desk and made a dash for the exit. The CCTV seemed to be looking at her every move during the few minutes walk along the corridor to the hospital lobby. She sped away from the car park, events of the day flashing through her mind. “What a day” she said to herself.

Tomorrow will be just as hectic but tomorrow her work on the `doctor` files would be complete.
