Has anyone seen the film EVIL DEAD TRAP, it is a japanese film made in 1988. It is a really good film and has stood the test of time, rather it is well made and ahead of its time, so has aged well. The japanese have always had a strong visual sense in their creative work and this reps rewards here. Compared to other films made in america at the time , this is in a different league. I didnt expect too much from this film and i was pleasantly surprised. It has an original storyline, and is nicely paced and structured although it loses a little bit of credibility towards the end. Nice understated special effects.
Of course not in the same league as the likes of ring, dark water and the grudge, but it shows that japanese horror was developing well way back in 1988. Dont expect too much and you wont be dissapointed also there is a sequel imaginatively titled EVIL DEAD TRAP 2, which is apparently even better. This film has influenced a film made in the late 90's named KOLOBOS which is also worth checking out.

No, he didn't. Raimi was the producer. The director, Takashi Shimizu, also directed the Japanese original. Sam Raimi, having claimed that, is a certified pussy, because "Ju-On" was hilarious.

Born: Japan
Through the 70's, Toshiharu Ikeda worked as an assistant director for Nikkatsu Studios, usually teamed with filmmaker Masaru Konuma, involved in such renowned pink classics as FLOWER AND SNAKE (1974), NOBLE LADY: BOUND VASE (1977) and WIFE TO BE SACRIFICED (1974). In a personal interview, he confessed that his duties included "grooming the starlets" or "snipping the pubic hair to avoid an objectionable shot." In 1980, Ikeda made his directorial debut with SUKEBAN MAFIA - simultaneously satirical, rousing, sexy and character driven. Certainly a rarity in the "pink film" (pinku eiga) arena.
He followed this with three more films for Nikkatsu, SEX HUNTER, BLUE LAGOON and ANGEL GUTS: RED PORNO. This last film was based on Takashi Ishii's manga and was part of the ANGEL GUTS series. He collaborated with Takashi Ishii on several more films, including MERMAID LEGEND - (a unique variation of the standard vengeance theme, sort of a classy (albeit very bloody) version of I SPIT IN YOUR GRAVE), SCENT OF A SPELL and EVIL DEAD TRAP.
EVIL DEAD TRAP has been called "Japan's greatest contempory horror film" and for good reason. It combines many of the elements that characterise Dario Argento's films (including the score), as well as some of the themes often explored by David Cronenberg. His next few films were more "thrillers" than Horror films and include RED FOLIAGE and EVIL DEAD TRAP 3: BROKEN LOVE KILLER.
Recently he has made XX: BEAUTIFUL PREY, XX:BEAUTIFUL BEAST and KEY. The XX films are based on the popular "XX" books of novelist Arimasa Osawa, collections of short stories featuring deadly or forceful women. These movies are not sequels but are conceptually similar. All highlight women in pivotal, customarily male roles. XX:BEAUTIFUL PREY, is easily the best of the series (5 episodes to date). It is a tense psychological shocker set against the perverse backdrop of aberrant S & M behavior.

Evil Dead Trap 2 is awful, completely different kind of film, more of a straightforward serial killer flick, with an early appearance of the ghostly little boy motif, also used in The Grudge and Dark Water etc..
Slightly gruesome with the killer using Film Clipping Shears as a weapon, alot of victims end up with their entrails hanging out from between their legs.
I have it in a DVD compilation with The Spiral and Uzamaki...
A lovely little compilation for EDT and Uzamaki, but I wasn't so much of a fan of the Spiral though....
EDT has some excellent gore scenes and the end was very bizarre, but I found the soundtrack (Perpetually repeating synth riff) to get a bit much after a while....
Overall though I really enjoyed it... And others who have watched it with me were also impressed.... Excellent especially for its time...
Noteworthy for anyone who can't stand damage to eyes ala ST:First contact...!! You have been warned....!!!
