Chaos

Chaos is a obvious ripoff of Wes Craven's masterpiece 'Last House on the Left'. Basically, it's upgraded for a new generation, with more violence, more gore, and unfortunately, a much much worse ending that is unintentionally funny.

Chaos works on a few levels, in fact, it does some things very well. The violence in the film is very convincing, as is some of the acting. When the girls are getting killed, it's sad, it's agonizing, and it's affecting. I don't get the complaints that a lot of people seem to have, saying that the movie is too brutal or gruesome. This is exactly how violence should be approached, it's more offensive and insulting for films to show violence as enticing and exciting, so that's one thing this movie does very well, show violence and murder as it should be shown, and thus giving it the respect and sadness it deserves.

This is about ALL the movie does well, though. The characters are all one dimensional clichés, the plot works well enough, but is a ripoff of another movie.

Then there's the ending, which is completely offsetting and destroys the entire mood of the film. I don't want to give it away, but it isn't satisfying, and isn't intriguing and it isn't compelling. It is funny, silly and cliché.

Overall, this movie is worth seeing just for the disturbing and brutal torture/death scenes. But if you're a fan of Last House, don't expect this to come anywhere near that in terms of narrative, theme power, and coherency.

--A side note: On the DVD there is a special feature, where David DeFalco gives a little interview/documentary thing in the Los Angeles Coroner's Office. In this, he acts like a complete idiot; almost celebrating the death contained in the building, which is the exact opposite of the message he tried to achieve in 'Chaos'. Very strange.

Anyone else seen this movie?
