Moped crash injures teen: A 16-year-old Perkasie boy was hospitalized Friday after he was injured in a moped accident in the borough, police said.
Steven J. Hockel suffered serious cuts to his neck after he was thrown over a car with his head smashing the back window of the vehicle in the 1:40 p.m. accident on South Main Street, according to police.
Hockel, who landed on the sidewalk, was pulling out of a driveway at the time of the accident, said Sgt. Robert Richardson. The boy's moped hit the front side of a southbound car.
Richardson, who said Hockel was conscious after the accident, said the neck injuries required surgery and that Hockel also suffered a cut to his head. “He was really lucky” his injuries were not worse, Richardson said. Police do not believe the boy was wearing a helmet when the crash occurred. Because of the small size of his moped, the law does not require it, Richardson said.
The hospital listed Hockel in fair condition late Friday.
The driver of the car, Ryan Shanley, 21, of Keystone Drive, Hatfield, was not injured, police said.
