Coat of arms...

Alright I'm working on this coat of arms thing and was hoping for some help. I've drawn it out and its description says 'ermine on black fess' I know what ermine is but what the hell would fess be? I can't seem to find anything helpful on google or any other website for that matter. Thanks for any help.

Well my understanding was a horizontal black stripe,thickish, across the center, with the stuff on top of it,which doesn't make sense because "ermine" are like black little pawn shapes so black and black is odd. huh

It has the ermine on top of and below the checkered area, I'm just not sure whether to shade every line in the checkered area or just top and bottom erm
