I've got a problem

Ok.. Stuff inside the house is rusting.
The smell of rust emanates from my room.
My computer table is starting to rust.
The food inside my refrigerator smells like rust, and has some kind of iron taste.

The smell of rust is really foul, and is causing me headaches and skin irritation.
I found out that the source came from a rusty old bike outside the garage.

Does anyone know how I can eradicate the rusty smell inside the house?
It's also causing all my other stuff to rust. Now it has affected the toolbox, and the food inside the pantry.
I'm afraid it might pose some serious health risks.

Tried asking for help in Yahoo Answers!, they replied with a spam messages.
Any input will be highly appreciated.

I remember I used some kind of low concentration acid (acetic?) to take the rust off of my dunebuggy's frame and headlights when I repainted it. Worked really really good, as in like 30 seconds of application and buffing = shiny metal big grin

Well seems like the first step is to seperate all the things "infected"

Second step, call someone in, not sure who just someone, get your place looked at.

If it could be a health risk i'm thinking you should sort it out asap?

Make your house smell good with smell good stuff. I find that citris fruits work best. I'm dead serious when I say to buy a bag of oranges, take off the peels, and scatter them throughout locations in your home. The orange citrus smell is MUCH better than the smell of that other stuff.

What will happen, over time: the rust smell will slowly dissipate and as it disspiates, you replace the lingering smell with the smell of oranges. For some reason, it overpowers and even seems to replace the nasty smells about.

This is also a way to get the puke smell out of your car when someone vomits in it. You have to shampoo the crap out of your car, but, leave orange peels ALL over your car util they are almost dry. Keep them in there until the smell is gone.

Also, the smartass answer because it's almost mandatory: use WD40 toe get rid of the rust (food too).

Iron Oxide, Fe2-O3 and Iron Oxide Hydroxide. (Forgot the proper formular for that one...it's not just simply writing out the elements with their subscripted numbers.

Excuse my ignorance but how does a rusty bike 'outside' your house make the rest of the house rusty/smell of rust...

We have a big rust patch on the ground touching the house wall, nothing happened so far over years and years.

Go to your local DIY shop, independent will be better, and ask them if they know how to deal with it, or put you in contact with people who know how.

AFAIK, rust can spread and 'infect' other metals overtime if left unchecked.
Unfortunately, I only noticed the rusty bike fairly recently (my apartment is huge) when the rust problem has already worsened.

I'm going to try Dadude's recommendation.. hope it can somehow alleviate the prob.

Very strange, indeed. I keep my stuff clean all the time. Maybe because it recently rained?
Like, the humidity that went inside the house caused it?

So I went to the hardware store today to look for something that can remove all the rust in the house.
I found this can of spray called WD-40.
So far, it has removed the rust on my computer table.

Professional.....what? I could be wrong as I have been in the past, but, I don't think there's a such thing as a professional home rust specialist. Maybe a car rust specialist, but not a home rust professional.

Who was that directed at? It's a valid point I made since rust can come about when there is moisture around a house/physical things where it shouldn't be, not bodily functions you silly billy. stick out tongue

I would have thought there must be some problem already in the apartment for it to be spreading everywhere from a rusty bike...

I believe.

stick out tongue
