the year is 2517. Earth-that-Was is long gone as all it's resources were mined. mankind found a new solar system with many planets and hundreds of moons. all were terraformed to fit human life and were colonized. the core worlds and moons were controlled by the Alliance (which is almost more corporate than a tranditional government) while the the outer worlds and moons are indepentally controlled. but around a decade ago (or so) there was a huge war between the Alliance and Independent planets, this was called the Unifacation wars. the Indepedent planets lost. key elements or this universe are
1. it's one large solar system, theres no faste-tan-light travel
2. the core worlds are like corosount (except more beautiful and still has alot of nature) while the outer planets are like the wild west
3. this means there is a huge mix of past and future
4. chinese language is as common as english as china is pretty much the only super power that survived
5. there are canabalistic demented men known as Reavers that have progressed far beyond madness. everbody fears them, and i mean everybody is scared even the government.
6. this happens before the movie so nobody knows about how the reavers come to be yet

bio: fought for the independent side during the war. he was under the command of Sergeant Reynolds and was one of the few still alive after the Battle of Serenity. it's been 6 years since then and now is looking for some more crew for his ship (some people can be old crew, some can be new)
the ship: a Firefly Class transport ship, i would have chosen something different but it just makes it easier becuase you can get a visual and i have pictures that shows the actual layout of the ship
