Snafu's Retro Corner: Will Harvey's The Immortal
Long before Mortal Kombat pissed off suburbia and soccer moms with its extreme violence, there was The Immortal.
The plot is simple enough. You're an unnamed wizard who finds himself inside the ruins of Erinoch City in search of your old mentor who has disappeared. Only thing is as you venture deeper into the dungeons, you find out things are not as what they seem.
Aside from the fact that the damn game was harder than Ninja Gaiden 1 on the Nintendo and the Arcade, the Sega Genesis/Megadrive version was particulary infamous for its gruesome death scenes. The Nintendo verion was a decent play, but the Sega and Amiga versions were the best, the Sega having an edge over the Amiga for its death scenes.
Good times for all...if you can get past the Spike Room, the Worm Room and that damn giant Black Widow.
