John Steinbeck
When I was at school we did The Red Pony, Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath and The Pearl. It's amazing how books you read as a kid stay with you for the rest of your life and subsequently he's now my favourite author. Anyone else like him?

OMG I love Steinbecks work!!!!! Of mice and men is a wonderful book. I remenber the part in which Lennie grabs Curley's fist, and nearly crushes it with his hand!!
My two other favorites are Cannery Row, and The Grapes of Wrath.

His books were the first I'd read where bad things happened, central characters dying etc. I'm pleased at the response to this thread already.

True, his books have very bad things happen to the characters. Yet still there is something in the characters experiences that makes you ask so many questions. Like, why do they have to suffer so much? Is like I wish someone can help them to get out of the poverties they suffer.
