Favorite Paintings

I'm curious as to what some of your favorite paintings are; we've been analyzing different paintings in one of my classes and I'm sure some of you guys could share some interesting works of art. So, have at it, post pictures of paintings you like or find interesting and if you feel like it, tell why.

Suppose I'll start.

I have always adored this painting by Vincent Van Gogh, called Starry Night, absolutely stunning oil painting:

"Looking at the stars always makes me dream"

Yeah, that's a classic. Really is a good one too, not sure if it's a favorite of mine, but worthy of being liked for sure.

Salvador Dali's "Persistence of Time" is another classic that I'm fond of:

Wanderer Above the Mists is one of my favorites too. I love romantic paintings, mainly because I just love romanticism but also because a lot of them are just so awe-inspiring.

Iconic paintings are also appealing to me because I like looking into the historical/mythological contexts behind them. With iconography, there's so many replications and interpretations of one subject... gives you a lot to flip through.

Favorite painters: Franz von Stuck, Tadema, Fernand Khnopff, Ivan Aivazovsky, Gustav Klimt

Caresses, Fernand Khnopff
(also Colin, it amuses me that the man in this painting oddly resembles Conner Burns)

This painting, called "An Experiment on a Bird with the Air Pump" by Jospeh Wright 1768, because it showed how far science has come in the last few hundred years

And now I work in a genetics lab hoping to cure diseases by fixing peoples DNA

Starry Night is also one of my favorite paintings. While at the Van Gough Museum in Amsterdam I got chased by security because I took a picture of Starry Night.

My favourite has to be this, 'Pollice Verso' by Jean-Léon Gérôme. Even though the gladiator is dwarfed by the arena he still manages to appear large, imposing and even god-like. The colours are earthy, the textures are amazing and the characters in the crowd detailed and expressive. The masterstroke is the red flag just behind the gladiator which brings your eye to him and makes him the focus of the painting.

Am I the only person who doesn't care for the "Starry Night" painting? To me, it looks like a child painted it. I guess it's supposed to be more of an emotional piece, but to me it is just unappealing.
