Pieces of eight was just a currency of the time so anybody could have had one. I think it was just a teaser to get the thought processes going.
Not to sure about the singing though. I guess it was to start the reconvening of the 9 but does that mean that any piece of eight could do it?

well, the kid sung the song, and had a PoE in his hand, when in Singapore Liz is singin it and Barbossa hands a PoE to Sao Feng would that mean coz the boy sung the song....the "song has been sung"?

Word must have traveled fast about the song. I'd have to watch it again, but all these people that are hanged in the beginning are hanged because they were either pirates or helped pirates. So that kid may have been a pirate and knew about the song all along, or maybe was part of a pirate legacy.

The symbolism of the song is so beautiful. I love it. I haven't decided if it ranks above the classic, "Yo ho a pirate's life for me."
