Decent question. I've had this exact same discussion with friends.
I'd take Rice: Here's why...
Moss is probably the best ever at just going deep, out-jumping people, and coming down with the ball. He's the home run threat, but can also go over the middle and be decent.
Rice is the quintessential catch anything guy. Probably not as good at the straight-out deep ball as Moss, but a better posession receiver.
I just feel like Rice is more complete. If I have 1 play to run and have to chuck it up, I'd take Moss in his prime. But if I want a receiver for a team, it's Rice.
Rice is the more complete player. Sure Moss is the best deep threat this league has ever seen, and pretty fast, but there is more to the wide receiver position than that. Rice could is more polished at running routes, and would catch balls all over the field. He was also a pretty good blocker. You could also count on him to catch everything that came his way. If I had to choose between two I would definitely take Rice just because he was the more complete player and was less likely to be shut down by a good cover corner.

Jerry rice no question. Although Moss is a natural to the game and a hall of famer to be certain. Rice just seemed to have a greater awareness to his position. The rules during Rice's reign were also more lenient in coverage

All the posts in this thread are good. I'd also like to add that Jerry Rice never disappeared for non-injury reasons during his prime, and that includes catching 83 and 92 balls in Oakland's '01 & '02 seasons.
Agreed. When Rice played, it wasn't illegal contact to breathe on a receiver.
Thanks, Indy, for bringing illegal contact back to life.

well after the playoff games that Moss was in where he only caught ONE pass in each game and only like 3 in the superbowl.right now I got to say that Moss cant carry jerry rices diapers. What made rice so great was he made big plays in PLAYOFF games.something Moss has failed to do.It wasnt jusr what he did during the regular season.Moss is going to have make plays like that one reciever of the Giants did who caught that miraculous pass from Manning before he can be mentioned in the same breath as Rice.I always thought Moss was going to be the second coming of Rice but he has to prove it in the PLAYOFFS before he can be mentioned on the same level as rice.

Rice no contest. Sure Moss broke the regular season record of td passes. But Rice set that record in a strike shortened season. He did it for a long, long time. The only thing Moss has on him is his ups and his long ass limbs. Rice is better at everything else. He has more heart and worked his nuts off in the offseason. He isnt a showboat but is a consumate professional. Rice was also a Super bowl mvp and Moss disappearing during the postseason only hurts his case.
Now if we are talking about who is the better dancer I have to say Moss even though I have never seen him dance.
also very well said. Like you and someone else said, the defender fell down and that was an easy catch for Moss to make.Yeah tyrees catch is the kind moss has to make in a superbowl to even be considered in the same breath as jerry rice.
